Fusing bizarre pop culture references with twisted tales of fire starting girls, demented child-killing clowns, and a host of other things that go bump in the night, Stephen King’s living is based on scaring the shit out of casual readers and moviephiles. To celebrate this week’s release of monster-based fog horror, The Mist on DVD, we’ve combed the King library to find his best works on the digital format. We’ll begin with the most recent.

The Mist
Combining wrath-of-God hysterics with brutally nasty CG and stop-motion creatures, director Frank Darabont’s The Mist chucks a bunch of normal folk escaping a mysterious fog into a grocery store with the town zealot. Once the bodies start to pile up, the normies turn to the religious nut, fearing the end of days. Psychologically scary and gory to boot, The Mist is one of those quick, fun flicks that ends on a downer. Still, it’s pretty awesome and the 2-Disc DVD comes with a black and white version of the movie, commentary, and a bunch of making-of features. Strangely, there isn’t an HD version of the movie.

The Running Man
Only loosely based on King’s novel of the same name, our favorite Austrian muscleman turned Governor; Arnold Schwarzenegger is forced to participate in a reality TV show in the near-future. Similarly to Rockstar’s corpse-a-thon, Manhunt, Arnie’s gotta fight his way through a burned out city in order to survive. Only instead of gang members, Arnold fights “Stalkers,” who are like wrestlers with hilarious gimmicks - e.g. Subzero’s ice rink of death, and Buzzsaw’s chainsaw attack. The 2-Disc Special Edition features commentaries and a bunch of sober documentaries on politics and TV in a post-9/11 culture. No HD version here either.
