Zodiac: Director’s Cut
The gist
David Fincher’s (Fight Club, Se7en) true story of a California-based serial killer who terrorized the Bay Area in the ‘60s and ‘70s, then sent bizarre encoded letters to the San Francisco Chronicle is all at once gorgeous to watch and completely terrifying. Filmed at a deliberate (read: slow) pace, every nuanced detail of the case unspools, creating claustrophobic tension that utterly shocks you that the killer was never found, just merely hinted at (not a spoiler if it’s history). Plus, it’s got method actor of the century Robert Downey Jr. pre-Iron Man, doing… well, his Robert Downey thing.
The 2-disc special edition just hit standard-def and HD-DVD, giving you insight into every facet of production. The level of detail astounds with a painstaking recreation of San Francisco streets circa late 1960s that misty-eyed hippies thought they’d never see again. You wouldn’t think this type of film would need a Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack, but its creepy ambience will totally draw you in and the scare the crap out of you. Where the hell is our Blu-ray copy?
