Remember when politicians were oblivious to the depths of gaming culture? Those days are long gone.
Last October, Congress began investigating virtual worlds to determine how the in-game earnings of those who play might be taxable. Although not always officially sanctioned by the developers, players have been converting in-game currencies and goods to real life wealth since the early days of Ultima Online, with Second Life real estate mogul Anshe Chung claiming last year to have earned more

Ever wanted to be evil? Really evil? Well, then you're mostly out of luck. Videogames are awash with brooding anti-heroes who are gruff and mean but ultimately good, but genuine villains in the lead role are pretty rare. For that matter, the few games with villainous leads tend to defuse them by pitting them exclusively against people who are even worse than they are (Manhunt, GoldenEye: Rogue Agent), or by playing up the whole "evil" angle for laughs (Overlord, Disgaea).
Boo to
Cheap games just got cheaper. Microsoft announced today that 16 games within the budget-priced Platinum Hits collection have now been elevated to "Best Of Platinum Hits" status, dropping their prices accordingly from $19.99 to just $9.99. The new pricing kicks in this month.
Some of the games have already been forgotten - you'll be hard pressed to find many Xbox owners still playing the party-game launch title Fuzion Frenzy, for instance. But we can't argue with the super-low pricing of titles
We Love
Grand Theft Auto IV trailer finally hits:
It might be a minimalist imitation of the Francis Ford Coppola/Philip Glass art film Koyaanisqatsi, but we loved every second of this stirring look at the new, realistic Liberty City. And then we loved it again. And again. And now we're all tingly in anticipation of our next look at the game. Keep 'em coming, Rockstar.
Super Paper Mario captivates an office:
It's no small secret we're stoked to have the first review for Wii's biggest spring
It wasn't a typical beginning for a press event.
Bathed in ever-present green light in a massive, cement amphitheater that was somehow part of a high school campus, on a stage rimmed by a reflecting pool and an array of variously sized chrome globes, the theme music for Halo began to play. Rather, it was being performed live, courtesy of "Corporeal", a rock band composed of five teenagers from Libertyville, Illinois - including a shredding female violinist who most likely just received about
PS3 on fire
An analyst (don't you love those guys, sitting around and having opinions for money? Wait, that's what we do... for less money) has released a report that PS3s were overheating and crashing at the Tokyo Game Show. You wouldn't think it was big news - but it's caused Sony's stock to dip, and Sony's PR team to fire off an angry retort to Next Generation.
Now the question remains... does this even matter? Was it due to badly-ventilated kiosks and overcrowding? Probably. We saw the
Get your hands on a PS3... easy
You probably won't be able to buy one this November, but it shouldn't be too hard to get some time with a PlayStation 3 - behind glass, anyway. Sony has announced plans to install 15,000 playable demo kiosks of PS3 at retail locations in the US and Canada in time for the system's launch - five times what the company offered for PS2, our sister site Next Generation reports. It should be pretty simple to figure out if the thing's worth $600 when you see it in
Out of all the game systems that have ever been released, which one did you hate the most? We didn't ask which one you liked, because let's face it: If you didn't own the one that we owned, you suck.
Most gamers are not affluent enough to own every system that comes out. But being a one-console family instantly puts you on one side of a fence. Historically, when faced with the reality that maybe - just maybe - the game console they didn't buy could have something going for it too, gamers
Friday 6 October 2006
Last night's ceremony for the Videogame BAFTA awards saw multiple winners in the absence of a GTA title to scoff the lot - with double wins for PS2 giant-killer Shadow of the Colossus, handheld joyfest LocoRoco on PSP and multiplatform Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter.
Colossus scooped the Artistic Achievement and Best Action and Adventure Game awards, while LocoRoco won Best Children's Game (we're already writing a strongly worded letter of complaint) and Best Game
