As readers, you're tasked with digesting an ocean of content in 72 constantly updated hours. It's a hell of a ride and we're glad to be at the end, especially given the rather dismal nature of this year's show.

Instead of wasting your weekend ...

After all, she's no more than an intangible chunk of computer software, a particularly well programmed series of 1s and 0s. You can't touch her. You can't look at her without seeing right through her. Even to the fictional characters within the fictional universe of Halo, she is utterly unattainable. And that is precisely what drives our overactive imaginations wild. She is the ultimate dream girl. Sassy, spunky, sexy... but beyond our reach in every possible way. ...

Forbes reported earlier this week NPD Group's up-to-date top ten U.S. videogame sales figures by units, revealing a list dominated by the Grand Theft Auto and Madden NFL franchises.

As seen below, GTA: San Andreas from 2004 is the top-selling game in the U.S. with 9.43 million units sold. The franchise shows up on the top 10 three times, while Madden appears four times.

Activision had two 2007 titles already break the top 10 (Guitar Hero III and Call of Duty 4), while EA had one 2007 title on the list in the form of Madden NFL 08."

"After being on the market since 2004, earning an average metacritic score of 95 and selling millions upon millions of copies, Microsoft decided Halo 2 could sit among the Max Payne and Shark Tales of the world and officially become a Platinum Hit.

Halo 2 finally decided it was time to lower itself to the Platinum Hits catalog and force Microsoft to quit milking its $39 retail price tag as its retail teets have become sore and gone dry (yeah, bad mental picture)."
Drugs. Gambling. Pornography. Halo. Addiction can take many forms.

How do you spot the warning signs? Medical experts that we read about somewhere on the internet tell us harmful overdependence could affect over 23 million people in this country alone, with fewer than 10 percent going untreated. And while the junkies and perverts can always go to Dr. Phil or Dr. Drew for help, those with an unnatural compulsion for Master Chief have ...
Halocide. If that isn't a recognized term, then we're officially coining it here and now. Sure, Forge's map editor serves up some fantastic multiplayer customization, and Theater offers more than an occasional glimpse at ragdoll amusement. But after making the video below, we can honestly say nothing shimmers quite so fine as elaborately laying out the hilariously macabre details of your own demise.

For true Halo fans, the games are only the beginning. Master Chief's universe extends well beyond the realm of consoles and controllers, after all, into areas both surprising and bizarre. He's in books, toys, art, comics, clothing, kitschy gadgets, even soda.

Some of this stuff, of course, is useless junk; quite a bit, however, is incredibly neat and worthy of both your attention and your cash. We've scoured the internet, we've ...
Game experience may change during online play. This innocuous disclaimer accompanies every game with Xbox Live connectivity, but what it actually means is that you're about to be subjected to a barrage of bigotry so profoundly offensive that it will shake your faith in humanity to the very core. During some recent Halo sessions, we encountered loads of vile, bilious ranting that seemed to know no restraint. Rather than using the mute button, we hit record and captured these ...

Hollywood trade journal Variety reported on October 19:

It's game over for Universal's and Fox's participation in the feature adaptation of Microsoft's Halo.

Both studios that agreed to co-finance the Halo movie have abruptly backed out of the project after Microsoft and the filmmakers (Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, etc.) refused to reduce their profit participation. The movie budget was rising above the original projected $135 million and rumored to approach $200 million. Microsoft demanded an up-front payment of $5 million for the film right to be made on October 15, a further payment of 10 percent of gross, and a screenwriter (Alex Garland) and a first-time director (Neill Blomkamp) dictated by Microsoft, Bungie and Peter Jackson.

The studios demanded a pay cut at the last minute before the October 15 deadline. Microsoft, Bungie and the filmmakers said no. So Universal and Fox pulled the plug on the Halo movie.
With a team of hundreds working on it, a marketing budget of millions and a fanbase as fanatical, informed and excitable as anything the best TV shows like Lost can throw up, Halo is perhaps - in fact, definitely - the most important videogame franchise currently in existence.

But it hasn't always been this way. Although commencing later than the usual bedroom development story, Bungie's rags-to-riches tale does follow similar lines, kicking ...

Bungie president Harold Ryan announced that the studio will continue to develop games exclusively for Microsoft Xbox 360 and Windows for the foreseeable future. Although Bungie will be free to make games for other platforms such as Sony PS3 at some undisclosed time in the future, Ryan said his studio has no plans to do so.

The Settle Times has revealed new details of the circumstances that led up to the Bungie-Microsoft split:

Ryan said Bungie was "used to being able to look around the room and see Bungie people," and they "feel lost" inside of the much-bigger organization of Microsoft. "That desire to be independent is something that a significant number of the people on the team still felt lacking," said Ryan.

Tom Edwards, who worked for Microsoft on the first two "Halo" games, said the split had been inevitable since 2005. Edwards saw firsthand the friction between the two cultures. He recalled Bungie developers being resentful at Microsoft for having him assessing the studio's development.

Microsoft did not disclose the contractual terms with Bungie over the split, leaving analysts and observers to speculate. Even as they go separate ways, Microsoft will continue to invest in Bungie, collaborate on projects with Bungie, and publish games from Bungie.

Forbes magazine reports (direct quotes):

Bungie Studios will break away from Microsoft, its parent since 2000, both companies said Friday, though Microsoft will keep an equity interest in Bungie and will continue to publish many of Bungie's games--future spin-offs from "Halo," included.

Why would Microsoft allow such a marvelous cash cow to roam free? ... "This is seen as a reward to them for 'Halo' doing so well," says Bungie writing lead Frank O'Connor. Day-to-day interactions with Microsoft will remain the same, he says.

. . .

For what O'Connor calls the "medium term," Bungie is committed to giving Microsoft first choice of any games it develops, and working on programs for the Xbox, Microsoft Game Studios and a spin-off from the "Halo" series. O'Connor says that in the future it is possible that Bungie would develop games for other platforms...

In time, Bungie developers could see their work appear on those platforms and on portable systems and computers, rather than toiling exclusively for Microsoft.

"This lets us not be tied down to the processes inherent in a big corporation," says O'Connor. "We never conformed to the typical Microsoft culture."
Beowulf

Beowulf: The Film will be out in November, and will be sharing a publicity budget with a Game of the same name. The film is produced by Robert Zemeckis (this isnt the last Zemeckis reference in this weeks Trailer Trash - youve been warned), and features an all star cast including Angelina Jolie, John Malkovitch, Anthony Hopkins, Crispin Glover, and others. This trailer for the game, however, stars a sword falling into a puddle over and over while some repetitive-looking ...

From the eBay auction:

"You are bidding on the best and most accurate Master Chief Costume on Ebay. This suit is my own personal suit that I am now giving up. The suit is so awesome, it has been featured on Spike TV, G4 TV, and in a Dell Commercial. This suit is FAMOUS!

Now it can be yours. The suit is made from a very hard Urethane Plastic. It isn't one of those cheaply casted vacuum formed suits. You could probably pound in a nail with your forearm if you wanted to. I'm 6"1' in the pictures, so you can figure out how well it might fit you from that.

Also included is an Assault Rifle Display. The reason I say display is because it's ONLY HALF OF A GUN - the other side is flat. See pictures for what I mean.

Included is:

The Best Halo Helmet in Creation. Perfectly accurate, and the right size. You can see perfectly out of the visor, and is very comfortable.

* Chest/Back Piece
* Shoulders
* Forearms
* Hand Plates
* Belt/Cod Piece/2 Belt Pouches
* Thighs
* Shins
* Ankles
* Toe Plates
* Boots
* Assault Rifle Display

You can have this suit in time for the halo launch! Wait until people see you walk in the door with this thing on! People will love you. Then, you can win all sorts of costume contests when Halloween comes around."
Aug 22, 2007

Were in for one of the hottest winters on record, and not just because of global warming. The sheer quantity and quality of games coming out before January completely boggles the mind.

Nothing, however, is as huge or important as the release of Halo 3 this September. The trilogy capper to one of the most successful videogaming franchises of all time is almost guaranteed commercial success. Okay, okay, it is guaranteed. But just because Halo 3 will be the biggest seller doesn't ...

As reported by the Daily Herald, the tournament is scheduled to take place on Sunday at the Mount Prospect Public Library. While the library is requiring parental permission slips before admitting underage players to the event, the game's M-rating is not spelled out. Some worry that parents may not realize that their kids will be playing a violent shooting game.

Halo is a science fiction video game series created by Bungie Studios. The Halo trilogy centers around Master Chief Petty Officer SPARTAN-117, or simply "Master Chief", a human cyborg super-soldier equipped with technologically-advanced battle armor, and his Construct AI companion, Cortana. The video games, particularly Halo: Combat Evolved, have been praised as being the best, and most influential, first-person shooters on a game console, with Halo being the Microsoft Xbox's "killer app". This has led to the term "Halo killer" being used to describe console games that aspire to be better than Halo.

A new Xbox Live Halo 2 Challenge is starting next week! With the chance to win some cool prizes, all you have to do is spend a measly $4 to get the new maps. What makes the tournament unique is that it will be played over a period of about 6 weeks and through a Halo 2 Matchmaking playlist! The top 64 on the playlist titled, "H2 Challenge" will be qualified for the final rounds and eligible to win the Elites. All games will be played on Tombstone and Desolation, so this is a bit of a ploy to make some Washingtons¿of course¿if you don't already have the maps¿you shouldn't even consider playing, probably. It's a fun little tournament that will most likely hold off the halo fanatics until Halo 3.

Info from Xbox.com:

Halo 2 Challenge Tournament
First, compete in the Online Tournament from June 11 through July 25, 2007. After a 15-day leaderboard qualification round, the top 64 ranked players on the "H2 Challenge" Rumble Pit playlist will advance to the live bracket round. Matches during the tournament will be played on the new maps, so get them now and practice.

First place prizes: Top three finalists with the highest scores after Grand Final play will receive an Xbox 360 Elite game console with an accessories package including an additional Xbox 360 Wireless Controller (black) and two Xbox 360 Play & Charge Kits.

Runner up prizes: The remaining five finalists not eligible for a Grand Prize will receive a 12 month Xbox LIVE Gold Membership subscription.
Halo isn't perfect.

Oh, there's no denying the series' greatness. Its brilliance, even. Halo and Halo 2 have done more to revolutionize and shape the way we play console shooters than any other game. Where do you think Gears of War learned the strategic economy of the two gun inventory? Where did GRAW and Call of Duty discover the simplicity of regenerating health? Above all, where did the entire genre realize the importance of online multiplayer? The answer is always... Halo.

As the years ...
Another error users are seeing is "Installation of content failed".

There's also many reports of big glitches in the new maps, such as multiple invisible walls in Tombstone.

"As you know by now, we're just over a week away from unleashing two brand new Halo 2 multiplayer maps upon the world. "Desolation", a remake of the Halo 1 map Derelict, and Tombstone, a remake of the classic "Hang 'em High", are both being released on Xbox Live on Tuesday 4/17. For the bargain price of $4.00 you'll be able to unleash a new can of whoop-ass on these completely re-imagined multiplayer arenas. We'll have a lot more to say (and show) about each of these maps next week as part of our continuing coverage on Bungie.net."
It's a new week, which means a new internet update trickling from the Bungie fortress, and this week it focuses on Halo 3's new and improved battle encounters.

"Halo 3 encounters are more fun, more challenging, more varied and more enjoyable than those in Halo or Halo 2," the update reads. "The interplay and strategies created among the various Covenant foes is just thrilling."

The opening guitar in the theme was recorded by seven-string guitar virtuoso Steve Vai. We've put in a few calls to the right people but they couldn't help us either way.

But seeing as though a Spartan featured as an unlockable character in Dead or Alive 4, we reckon there's every chance of this ...
One drummer, one guitarist (no, not Steve Vai who recorded the guitar in Halo 2 ), one bass player and one awesome violinist is all it takes - as well as some serious talent - to play your favorite videogame theme tunes. There's also a hi-fi belting out the famous monks in the room too, but that just adds to the whole performance.

In a recent interview with EDGE magazine, Chris Butcher of Bungie Studios has publicly admitted that Bungie committed many mistakes in the development of Halo 2. Comparing the time dedicated to polish Halo and its sequel, Butcher said:

"We miscalculated, we screwed up, we came down to the wire and we just lost all of that. So Halo 2 is far less than it could and should be in many ways because of that. It kills me to think of it. Even the multiplayer experience for Halo 2 is a pale shadow of what it could and should have been if we had gotten the timing of our schedule right. It's astounding to me. I f*cking cannot play Halo 2 multiplayer. I cannot do it. And that's why I know Halo 3 is going to be so much better."

Former Bungie team lead Max Hoberman has told GamesIndustry.biz that his new studio, Certain Affinity, won't necessarily develop games exclusively for Xbox and Xbox 360 - despite a close relationship with Microsoft.

Certain Affinity officially opened its doors earlier this week, announcing that its first project would be to develop multiplayer maps for Halo 2 in partnership with Bungie Studios and Microsoft Game Studios.

It's also planning to produce a title for Xbox 360, details of which have yet to be announced.

According to Hoberman, "Microsoft has been a great partner for Bungie, so Certain Affinity has every intent of building a strong relationship moving forward.

"We're also huge fans of the Xbox 360 and Xbox Live, but it's too early to say whether we'll ultimately end up exclusive to Microsoft platforms," he added.

Hoberman spent 10 years at Bungie, where he was team lead for the multiplayer sections of Halo 2 and Halo 3 - initiating and overseeing gameplay, interface and online systems.

"What we've accomplished with Halo 3 is extraordinary," he commented. "Halo 2 turned the online world on its head, but Halo 3 is going to rip its head right off."

Hoberman's new staff members have experience of working for a range of developers including Bungie, Origin and Digital Anvil, and have worked on titles such as Ultima, Myth, Ghost Recon and Asheron's Call.

A statement on the Certain Affinity website reads: "Certain Affinity's mission is to create innovative action-oriented games set in immersive worlds. Now, lots of people say things like that, so you're probably wondering what sets us apart.

"Well, there's really nothing we can say to convince you today, but we hope that when we have something ready to show you'll decide for yourself that we aren't full of sh**. In the meantime all we can really do is point to our collective...
Gears of War got us thinking: Massive explosions. Guts strewn everywhere. People running in terror. Few things ignite the minds of gamers like a good alien invasion. It may be bizarre or terrifying (and in the case of Gears of War, it may come from underground instead of outer space) but in video games, aliens always bring massive destruction in their wake. This week, we take a look back at the seven games with the most memorable, exciting or disturbing alien invasions... ever.

7. Halo 2 ...

A recent post by Bungie revealed that, thanks to database programmer extraordinaire Roger Wolfson, games of Halo 2 online have 'officially surged over the four billion games played mark'. And that's in a little under two years after the game's launch.

Wolfson also notes that they're pretty close to hitting the four million unique players mark. Along with the update Bungie posted a lovely pie chart, which does more than take us back to our school days. It clearly shows that team-based games are by far the most popular.
Friday 28 July 2006
An eight-year-old boy has bought himself a hamster after earning money as a videogames coach, giving lessons online to gamers wanting to better their Halo 2 skills. He's named the hamster Cortana after the AI character in the sci-fi Xbox shooter.

The lad in question is a New Yorker who has the incredible name Victor De Leon III, but is better known on Xbox Live as Lil Poison. He is able to charge $25 per hour for Halo 2 tutoring thanks to being part of a training group ...

Major League Gaming has signed the top four-man Halo 2 team for $1 million, and a leading individual pro gamer for a separate $250,000.

Team Final Boss snagged the lucrative $1 million contract, while Tom "Tsquared" Taylor signed up for $250,000. The signings are the largest ever by MLG.

David "Walshy" Walsh, team captain of the four-man Halo 2 team Final Boss said, "It's a huge honor to be part of the first gaming team to get this kind of money. This kind of contract just shows how serious MLG is about building the League. Three years ago I never could have imagined that I'd be making more money than my parents playing video games!"
Halo 2 is still the most popular Xbox Live title, including Xbox 360 games, according to figures released by Microsoft.

For the week beginning 5 June, the top five Xbox Live titles for Xbox 360 start with Call of Duty 2 in slot one, with Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter and The Elder Scrolls IV following. A coincidental list for Xbox was also released, with Halo 2 predictably taking up the top slot, followed by Battlefield 2: Modern Combat and Counter-Strike.

Last month at E3, Halo developer Bungie dropped off a cargo container full of unanswered questions surrounding the franchise, but only gave us a styrofoam cup worth of explanations.

This week in their update, Bungie maintained that Master Chief's return to the PC will remain a Vista-only experience, but won't take advantage of the cross-platform matchmaking that Vista's Live Anywhere service could offer. Frank "Frankie" O'Connor of Bungie explained that "the gulf - more than two years - ...

In the ever illuminating, unfailingly entertaining weekly update from Bungie.net's Frankie he once again treated Halo fans everywhere to nuggets of primo information.

According to this week's update Halo 2 for PCs is finally stepped over the rainbow from black and white test version into actual color. He settled once and for all that Halo 2 will not be on Xbox Live Anywhere's service. According to Frankie: "The gulf (more than two years) between the launch of Halo 2 on Xbox and Halo 2 on PC means that a level playing field would be impossible. Add to that the fact that both versions have their controls and aiming system balanced and tuned for that system's abilities and you would have a lopsided situation at best.
Halo 2 is brilliant. You've probably guessed that already. But it's incredibly hard to talk about in any depth for fear of spoiling it. It's a game you have to experience for yourself.

Bungie have seemingly done the impossible in keeping the single-player game under wraps for the totality of its gestation and there's a reason for this. It's full of twists - and one enormous one in particular.

Aside from the actual gameplay, Halo 2 is concerned with telling you an epic sci-fi story, and half ...
Bungie has announced it plans to release an auto-update for Halo 2 today, via the Xbox Live service, in order to rectify minor bugs and completely readdress the balance of the game.

In its third auto-update of Halo 2, Bungie will make the biggest changes to the weapons balance in an effort to nullify any unfair advantages certain weapons may have, and ensure gameplay is kept as varied as possible.

"The scale of the auto-update gave us a unique opportunity - a chance to implement balance ...
We, on the other hand, pointed out it was more likely to be a collection of multiplayer maps. And ...
