QOTW: What's your favorite N64 game of all time?

Answer our weekly question and check out our favorite user answers from last week!

Words: Tyler Wilde, GamesRadar US

Every week the hosts of TalkRadar present and answer a new "Question of the Week" - a personal inquiry which unearths some of our deepest, and sometimes most sinister, gaming memories. Everyone is encouraged to answer each week's question, so go ahead, tell us your most glorious, nostalgic, or shameful story!

This week's question:

What's your favorite N64 game of all time?

Stop. Hammer time. That is, the hammer that'll come down on you if you say Super Mario 64 or Ocarina of Time. We know you loved those - but you must have a personal anecdote about some oooooooooother N64 game that touched your heart in all the right ways. Like those Scion commercials say, become one of us by becoming none of us.

Answer this week's question in the comments!

Questions can also be answered in the QOTW forum thread. Our favorite posts this week will be read next week on TalkRadar 65, and appear in the next edition of this article. Listen to TalkRadar 64 on Friday for our answers!

Last week's question:

What once-beloved game do you now hate?

Below are a few of last week's answers that tickled our collective fancies, but since we can't feature them all here, check out last week's article and forum thread for more...

"GTA III. Of course I was blown away at the time (wait, wait, wait...I can go anywhere??), but as my soul has hardened with the pudding-skin-crust of age, I began to absolutely hate the game. It's ugly; not that it was ever good looking. It's repetitive; I can only kill so many generic guidos ya know. But worst of all, the hookers that 13 year olds like myself at the time were supposed to cream themselves over looked like this:"

"Bucky O'Hare for the NES. I used to love that shit. I played it daily and beat it at least once a week. Then I tried playing it a couple weeks ago and I can't believe how much time I wasted."

"Twisted Metal 2-Back when I first got my Playstation 1 this was the first game I got and I played the hell out of it. Of all the games I ever owned on the system, I would always go back to TM2 and it without a doubt got the most play time. Eventually I moved on to PS2, and after a couple years I sold my beloved Twisted Metal in favor of newer, better looking games. Now I own a PS3 and one day while browsing the store I said "NO WAY TWISTED METAL 2!" I quickly downloaded it and started playing. The main menu brought me back and I was happy as could be. Then I started actually playing the game and within the first 5 minutes I thought, "this used to be fun?" The controls are terrible, and the graphics just look like 2D cutouts made into paper craft. I guess games have advanced a long way since I first played TM2. Some games hold up against the test of time... but not this one."

"X-Men for the Genesis. I remember playing it growing up and loving. I guess because I was a huge X-Men fan then and had rose colored glassed on. I played it again on a friends computer through an emulator the other week and I about vomited because it was so bad. Horrible controls, getting stuck in the levels, mutant powers were used horribly... That's kinda why since then I've refused to play any older games, either on emulators or on Live. I guess it's better to have a good memory of them than to relive it."

"Sonic Adventure 2 Battle. I played that game to death as a kid. I picked it up years later and realized how bad it was. And how annoying Shadow was. What pisses me off the most was that back when I somehow liked this game, I spent most of my time in the Chaos Garden playing those abysmal Chaos minigames."

"I would have to say that Crash Bandicoot 3. It was the first game I rented and the joy I had was enough to block the memory of all other PSX games I had. Recently however, I came across the rascal on the PSN and now it appears that Crash has aged as well as a turd on a month old pizza. The graphics and humor that gripped me at the tender age of 8 have given way to what appears to be one rule. Run in a straight line. Possibly hit X every now and again to liven the proceedings up. There is some good natured 'jokes,' but I'm pretty sure deviant art has some better pictures of the thrusting pelvis of a ginger bandicoot. The worst thing is that my childhood now feels like it's been raped by that f***ing pelvis. Oh, and I'm probably a Sony Fanboy, so my childhood's wrecked and I'm going to be hunted down."

"Star Wars Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II

The choices in that game didn't ever seem to reflect anything. You do things for the light side but in the end it says you're the DARK SIDE! The visuals were bland. The only things I love about that game still are SOME force powers (the other ones were spotty at best) and the boss battles, epic boss battles.

Sadly everything else about it I hate.

Espiacilly these GOD DAMN LIVE ANIMATION CUT SCENES! "

I'd have to say Donkey Kong 64, although it didn't touch my heart in all the right ways.....because that would be wrong......

Super Mario Brothers. I was like what 5? and the whole day I would be sitting in front of the screen. I loved having the Nintendo characters fight. After spending a whole day (nearly 24 hours) beating the thing, I decided to mess around in the options, and back then, since I wasn't the greatest reader, I deleted all the data. The next day I beat it again. I cant believe I sold the thing. The memories...

Turok 2 : Seeds of evil will always be an amazing experience for me personally. Most of the time i just used to swim around because i was about 3 and really scared to kill any of the enemies. I still loved it however and it was one of the first FPS's (Goldeneye was technically first, another beloved game) that i ever played and allowed me to discover the wonders of swimming in video games.

Oh baby! The Legend of Zelda: OoT. In my book, there's not many games out of all the systems that can top that one, let alone on the N64. I just recently purchased the Master Quest for the GCN and am impatiently awaiting its arrival. I seriously can't wait to play through it and get just as angry at the Water Temple as I did before.

My favorite N64 game of all time was Super Smash Brothers. I was in Kindergarten at that time and I got it for my birth day. I was kid of the block, but damn was that game so popular. Not only did our teacher let us play it in her class. Because of of SSB a huge fight between almost all of the kindergarten and almost all of the first broke out. I was taller than all of the 1st graders so I didn't get my ass kicked I did all of the ass kicking, and all of the Falcon Punching

Mario Party Original. Only game I played every Saturday with my friends.

Aside from that maybe Army Men.

Destruction Derby. You get one life to out live everyone other car in the race. If you crash, it's over. Half of the cars go one way and half go the other. At the time, it didn't get more exciting when the cars met in the middle and you narrowly avoided crashes and exploding cars at 100mph. Plus, in the actual destruction derby levels, plowing through other cars with the nearly invincible ambulance in the middle of ancient Aztec ruins was just incredible.

Banjo Kazooie without a doubt! I absolutely loved that game (and it's sequel)! I was devastated when i found out the newest Xbox360 one wasn't a traditional platformer. I guess I have a thing for collect-a-thons haha. And the series came out on XBLA so I got to play it all over again!

That's a good question, it was an awesome console with so many great games.... Diddy Kong Racing was a fantastic game. in fact, I really miss that game, I think it was better than Mariokart64 (which was a very good game),
DKR was Bright and attractive, the planes and hovercrafts gave it an extra dimension and some of the courses were just out of this world. who remembers getting 3 rocket boosts stored up and letting go of the accelerator for the massive green boost past your friend and over the line? Priceless :-D. the adventure side of things was pretty cool too with all the bonuses and hidden secrets. and if that wasn't enough, what about having to beat all of T.T's times I'm sooooo dying to go buy an N64 and DKR now, and it's all your fault gamesradar for getting me all nostalgiac!! damn you!!
next you'll have me out hunting down a sega master system to play alex kidd!!. don't be silly, I'd just do it the illegal (and therefor more fun) way with an emulator and plug my xbox 360 controller into the PC, Magic :-D

There can only be one??? I still own my N64 and play it from time to time, so my answer is based on: (1) what I can still stand playing today after being spoiled by major graphic enhancements from today's games and (2) does the game bore me at any point. I'd have to say the games I continually replay and don't get that "been there, done that" feeling are Goldeneye and Banjo-Tooie. I love both OoT and Majora's Mask, but they don't hold my attention much anymore (except for Majora's dungeons, which are fantastic). SM64 didn't age well and I can't get more than 5 stars in a row without being bored. Goldeneye just doesn't get old even given the fact that I know where every enemy is--it's still a challenge and better than a lot of shooters on the market (esp. on Nintendo systems). And Banjo-Tooie in my mind is the pinnacle of "collect-a-thon" gaming with its interconnected worlds, colorful and still humorous characters and language, and graphically its the pretties N64 game in my book. I miss Rare.

It's so damned hard to choose between Paper Mario and The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. On the one hand, there's Paper Mario's humour, character, and simply-fun combat system. It never gets old, and this is a game that I play almost every year. On the other hand, there's Majora's Mask's incredible use of atmosphere, dark story, and characters who elicited real empathy. I guess I'll go with the latter. There's just no other game that's managed to have an emotional impact on me like Majora's Mask did.

Well for me, it's gotta be Banjo-Tooie. I couldn't tell you how many hours I sunk into that game, and to this day is my favorite collect-a-thon game out there, as I haven't played many since. Too bad my N64 stopped working, but I got over it when it came out on XBLA. Hoorah for nostalgia.

It's a toss up between Mario Kart 64 and Star Fox 64. I played the piss out of Star Fox. beat it at least twice a week. Plugged it in the other day and i still love it.
Mario Kart 64. my sister and i still play it and we get really competitive. It looks like crap and it's gotten kind of buggy with age, but it's still way more fun than just about any current gen racing game, including Mario Kart Wii.

Pokemon Snap. I loved the complete awesomeness of driving around in a kick ass flying yellow pod thing and taking pictures of pokemon for an old guy (thats what i understood the game to be back when i was like 7) Im still proud of my Mew picture. What's the score on my mew picture? It's over 9000!!!!
