QOTW: What is your all-time favorite console?

Answer our weekly question and check out our favorite user answers from last week!

Words: Tyler Wilde, GamesRadar US

Every week the hosts of TalkRadar present and answer a new "Question of the Week" - a personal inquiry which unearths some of our deepest, and sometimes most sinister, gaming memories. Everyone is encouraged to answer each week's question, so go ahead, tell us your most glorious, nostalgic, or shameful story!

This week's question:

What is your all-time favorite console?

Which console grabbed you and gave you the biggest, warmest electrical hug of them all? (PC is also acceptable, but tell us about the specific machine!) Why is it your favorite? How did you get it? Did you have to mow lawns, beg your parents? What games or features did you obsess over?

Answer this week's question in the comments!

Questions can also be answered in the QOTW forum thread. Our favorite posts this week will be read next week on TalkRadar 60, and appear in the next edition of this article. Listen to TalkRadar 59 on Friday for our answers!

Last week's question:

What dead company or franchise do you miss the most?

Thanks for the epic participation on our last question! Below are a few of the answers that tickled our collective fancies, but since we can't feature them all here, check out last week's article and forum thread for more...

"Working Designs, though I guess Atlus and NIS have kind of filled the void. Back in the day, getting a Working Designs game was a special event. The foil box art and the full color manuals with glossy pages were fantastic and unique. Any time I look at my copy of Popful Mail for Sega CD it gives me the greatest feeling. Like it has a magical hold over me."

"Shenmue and Shenmue II were so full of awkward moments. I'm sure people would hate it today because in a broad sense, all you did was walk around talking to people, buy capsule toys of Sega characters, get into the occasional fight, and play a game or two of Space Harrier. It's also the game, I think, that unfortunately helped to "pioneer" the evil quick-timer event. But among that, I always felt like Shenmue had one of the best stories ever penned for a medium like video games. We just want to know how it ends!"

"Sega, obviously. Mikel pretty much hit it on the head, but I'll rant anyway.

Take the Saturn. It was underpowered, difficult to develop for, and (in terms of sales) was a distant third. But Sega never stopped trying. Just the first party titles alone made it the best system of that generation (and in my opinion, one of the best of all time). When they went third party, for about two years they were still putting out AAA titles such as JSRF and Panzer Dragoon Orta. And in the arcades they were unrivaled. Then came the Sammy takeover, and Sega became a shadow of its former self. Unless you live in Japan, they hardly develop anything anymore, and what they do develop always seems to turn out mediocre to terrible.

I'll also take this opportunity to say that Sonic R was great! Once you get past the control issues and the bizarre doll version of Tails it's a good game. "

"Factor 5. OK, Lair was awful, but until that point, they had a great track record and Rogue Squadron 2, a launch title for the Gamecube still looks better than 95% of the games on Wii, even some first party titles. And it plays great. Super Turrican was fantastic. Plus they were rumored to be working on Pilotwings and the Kid Icarus Wii that the interwebs has been crying about (myself included) for so long."

I would say that my favorite is the ps3. It just does so much, like blu ray, games, and movies.

The N64 was so great and expensive. Why can`t nintendo do a machine like that again?

I love the PS3. I really like the 360 but Sony stol my heart with the Kingdom Hearts seiries.

Probably the N64. It was my very first console, so it always gives me a good feeling playing it. It's nice every once in a while to get back to my roots, forget all that modern stuff like good graphics and fancy over the top games and get back to a good, hard core, retro N64 game. Besides, I still remember waking up every morning really early to play my first game ever, Mario Kart 64, before school. And also, the N64 is one of the few consoles that just did it right. After all, so many legendary games were from the N64: Ocarina of Time, Super Mario 64, Star Fox 64, etc. etc. For me, the N64 stands as one of, if not the greatest console of all time.

the NES. what other console can you go back to after years and years and STILL enjoy playing it? you can't do that with a PS1, cause the pixelly 3D makes you wanna barf. you can't do it with an Atari, cause it makes your eyes bleed now, and you can't do it with a dog. cause that's unnatural.

GBA SP. I spent more time on that playing every Megaman Battle Network games and Fire Emblem then on any other system.

BTW, theres an podcast number error. The new podcast Friday should be 59 while the next one is 60.

Can anyone who grew up with the NES really say anything different? There has to be more nostalgia tied up with Nintendo when it was the only game in town than any system since.

Such a hard choice to decide my favorite console as the SNES gave me Super Metroid, Starwing and Illusion of Time, the PlayStation gave me Music 2000, Metal Gear Solid and Dino Crisis... It's more about the games for me, I was lucky enough to own or share most of the consoles released the past fifteen years with my brother.
Corsair89  - 4 months 25 days ago
The N64 was my childhood. I owned only about a dozen games for years and was happy to play them. And I didn't even own Super Mario 64 or The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Nowadays, I play about a dozen games a month and get a dozen more the next month.

The SNES. The NES was cool and all, but there weren't too many jaw dropping moments in many of the games, while SNES titles just went balls out the entire time. Remember the first time Bowser rushed the screen in his airship in Super Mario World? Or maybe when the third boss severs his own head off with the doors in Contra 3? Or the mindblowing Donkey Kong Country soundtrack? There's too many things about that console and it's games that are too awesome. Though I may be biased simply because Super Metroid is the greatest game ever created, but I doubt it.
gopikmin  - 4 months 25 days ago
I say mine is the wii. the wii is more convenient for me and plays my favorite franchise, PIKMIN. dsi comes next. Ps3 would have come in second on my list if i could get it to work on my big tv.

Dreamcast, the only games I actually like on it are the Shenmue games and Sonic Adventure (as horrible as it is), but it just has that charm and nostalgic feel that I like to come back to every now and then.

Runner-up: Xbox 360. Basically a Dreamcast with full DVD support, HD, and voice chat, among other things.
