Goldeneye: Rogue Agent

7 ways to spot an impending crap sequel

Let our foolproof guide help you cut through the crap before it's even released

Words: David Houghton, GamesRadar UK

The invention of apple pie must have been a staggering moment in human history. Fruit, sugar and pastry, together for the first time in a brand new, era defining experience. Minds would have been justifiably blown, history was certainly made, and the influence of that inspired quantum leap in food design is rightfully still felt today.

So you know what would be really cool? Apple pie 2.0! We'll take everything that was great about the original design and bring it right up to date for a modern audience. We'll replace the pastry with chrome, upgrade the sugar to shiny metal ball-bearings and switch out those old, outdated apples for miniature disco balls with robots inside. It'll be everything everyone loved about the original apple pie, but newer and cooler! It absolutely cannot fail!

Nothing proves Darwin wrong like videogames (well, apart from peanut butter, anyway). While we're taught that things must grow and adapt in order to survive in a changing world, some franchises stubbornly sit on the throne of yesterday's glories year after year, claws dug into the arm rests with an indignant disregard for personal development. And as they sit there, pumping out unevolved clone after unevolved clone, they somehow manage to make enough money to continue.

We need to stop giving these games a free ride. We know that the best games leave the player wanting more, but every time we buy a sequel which is just more, without any improvement, we're encouraging the kind of innovation dearth which we as gamers rally against every day. Be strong people. Break the chain. It's tough love, but it's necessary.

Worst offenders
The Zelda series, the Dynasty Warriors series, Resident Evil (pre-Resi 4), Doom 3, Super The Empire Strikes Back, Super Return Of The Jedi, most of the Mega Man series, Rampage: World Tour, Tekken 4 & 5

Notable exceptions
The Pokemon series, the Super Smash Bros. series

Potential future offenders
The next Dynasty Warriors, the next Zelda, Resident Evil 5, Doom 4, Tekken 6

Yes, we know this point probably directly contradicts the one before it, but we're on a roll with this barrage of negativity, so we're going to make it anyway. An overly-similar sequel might be a bad thing, but an overly different one can be a spectacular disaster. Sometimes, we wonder why certain games are made as sequels at all, such is the departure they make from their original source material.

When sequels work, it's because they expand upon a basis that people loved in the first place. While the word "expand" is of course key to that sentence, a follow-up has to maintain the same basic hook that pulled in players in the first place, otherwise it's just a new game with a familiar title. To ignore the whole "Give them more of what they want" philosophy central to a sequel is to risk alienating the audience, and when a change in genre is involved, you're putting the developer in unfamiliar territory to boot. And that can be very, very dangerous indeed.

We ask you, would it have been in any way sensible for Warner Bros. to follow up Batman Begins with a Busby Berkeley-style musical western? Or for the first season of Heroes to have been succeeded by a range of character-themed cheesecakes instead of a TV show?

Worst offenders
Mortal Kombat Mythologies, Mortal Kombat: Special Forces, Tomb Raider: Angel Of Darkness, Deus Ex: Invisible War, Resident Evil: Survivor, Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles, Driver 2, Bomberman: Act Zero

Notable exceptions
Resident Evil 4, Alien Breed 3D, Quake 3 Arena, World of Warcraft

Potential future offenders
Guilty Gear 2, Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, Bionic Commando again, the poor bastard.

Do we really need to explain this one? Probably not, but we will anyway, in the hope that Sonic Team is reading this and finally gets the message.

It's bizarre to think that a new Sonic game used to rightfully generate the same excitement as a core Mario title. But whereas the plumber has been looked after by people who understand how to make the most of his qualities on modern hardware, Sonic's devs have been floundering ever since the first 3D misfire of Sonic Adventure. The modern Sonic games never feel like they understand how to get the best out of the format (Tip: 2.5D and nothing else) and that uncertainty of design leads to flailing new direction after flailing new direction. All of them crap.

Worst offenders
Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic Heroes, Sonic and the Secret Rings, Sonic The Hedgehog 2006

Notable exceptions
Sonic Rush

Potential future offenders
Sonic Unleashed, Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, Sonic and Bionic Commando at the Olympic Games

WARNING THIS IS A LONG-ASS COMMENT
i dont know what the hell your talking about for the last one. ya i know "well of course that guys gonna protect Sonic!" is what your thinking. well tell your dam brain to shut the fuck for a sec. I like 70% of the Sonic games. for good reasons too. Sonic Adventure: It was pretty cool. had some storyline for everything that didn't make much sense. had some sad moments in the end of some of the characters storylines, and the fact that you can be all those characters! Big might as well have been Sega bass fishing his levels took the longest but and i always play as him last. Gamma was cool cuz he had a gun and not to mention he was working for eggman. being even close to the villian side was nice. with Amy it was fun to wack things with her hammer. Knuckles searching for the Master emerald was fun. Tails could fly and that was cool. Sonic was hella fast and had all those parts were you hold forward for a while. all the characters had something spacific they were doing. Sonic looked for the Chaos Emeralds. Tails was flying by his side helping and racing him to the finish using flying shortcuts and also some missions with the tornado. Knuckles looked for the master emerald pieces. Amy ran from Eggman's robots and tried to find the bird's parents. Big looked for Froggy who had recently eaten a Chaos emerald and Chaos' tail. And Gamma tried to destroy all of his robot family imprisoning animals. and the game had awesom music. Sonic Heroes did suck I must admit. The major change of voice in Tails pissed me off. the only time his voice was good was in Sonic Adventure 1 and 2. they left out one of the Team Chaotic characters. the overall gameplay is hard and annoying. shadow the hedgehog game has the same problems. plus in that Shadow cursed a lot. And so did Sonic! I'm ok with swearing but not with Sonic characters doing it. It just doesn't fit you know.

Hmmm...Fallout 3 seems damn safe, and Bionic Commando looks like his limbs are gonna get ripped off, and his head smashed in with the "FAIL!, -100000 out of 100!" stick, unless he shines through this

@Motherload: chill yeh? the sonic games have kinda tripped up over their red running shoe encased feet but law of averages say that they will make decent games if enough bad are made.

proof of that in your comment.

BUT sonic adventure didnt effect the other ($h!t) games, and therefore SEGA are dumb fucks.

and lmao at the bomberman picture and bionic commando =P

Motherload, people like you are why Sega keeps making shitty Sonic games. Thanks.
Cwf2008  - 11 months 10 days ago
Ya what FancyRat said: Its dumbasses like you that are letting Sega get away with making crappy Sonic games. And poor poor Bionic Commando...they must really hate it. i wonder what Sonic and Bionic Commando at the Olympic Games will be like? If Bionic Commando looses does he kill everyone?

1)The words "Need for Speed" in the title, combined with an effort to go sim: You know it won't be a Forza Motorsport, not even a gran turismo. You know it's still going to be something arcadish, but with controls that will always make you feel NOT in control of the car (something the arcade NFSes like high stakes and carbon somehow did perfectly), and with brain dead opponments (so, managing to finish first, even with the lousy controls, doesn't count as an accomplishment). Why are we buying it in the first place? Worst offenfers: Need For Speed: Porsche, Need for Speed ProStreet

2)The logo of Activision Value (Head Games) printed, written, mentioned or credited anywhere on the outside or in the inside of the package: run away from the bargain bin. Worst offenders: Cabela's 4x4 Off-Road Adventure 2,3 - Cabela's Big Game Hunter 2,3,4,5,6,2002,2004 season,2005 adventures,2006 trophy season,2009,10th anniversary - Cabela's Dangerous Hunts 2 - Cabela's Ultimate Deer Hunt 2 - Cabela's GrandSlam Hunting: 2004 Trophies - Cabela's African Safari - Extreme PaintBrawl 2,3,4 - Ultimate PaintBrawl 3 - Sea World Adventure Park Tycoon 2

- If it's a Sims and an expansion pack, with nothing but some new furniture and that kind of stuff stuff to add to the game: Nuff said Worst offenders: Too many to bother mention

They're still are sorta right about sonic though its like every few years since sonic 2 they've been killing, no murdering the sonic franchise sonic heroes was good and Dx directors cut was too but they shouldn't make Sonic games so quickly because eventually they'll lose focus mess up and no-one will buy sonic games anymore and the hedgehog we used to cheer on will die. And what's up with Bionic Commando they really called that game out.

But Sonic Adveture, Adventure 2, Heroes and Secret Rings were all well recieved by critics (which is you guys). Sonic 06 wasn't the best, so ok, maybe you should be looking more at Shadow the Hedgehog and the Game Gear games if you want bad Sonic.
