Mystery. Betrayal. Men who voluntarily go by the name "Tracer Tong." These are just a few of the things that made Deus Ex - one of the first RPG/shooter hybrids and an enduring example of PC-gaming superiority - great. And with Deus Ex: Human Revolution looming large at E3 next week, we can't help but wax a little nostalgic about them, particularly the one thing that's arguably lasted longer than anything else in the minds of Deus Ex fans: its music.
Stripped down to the bone, most videogames are about running errands: go here, kill that thing over there, bake a cake. There’s almost always a clear justification for them – save the world, get revenge, etc. – but usually, the real reason you do these things is simply because the game told you to. But can the game be trusted? Are you fighting for the right side? How can you be sure?
