EA orders its hit PC shooter series to report for duty on consoles

Military shooters keep popping up like dandelions. It's sometimes hard to tell them apart. Heck, even their commercials look identical. EA's Battlefield series has always carved its own path, however, with its unique large-scale warfare. But the landscape of consoles is a different battleground altogether, and this series both flourishes and flounders in its new setting.

On consoles, your game needs a single-player campaign mode; there's no getting around it. Instead of slapping a half-assed attempt together, EA and developer DICE chose to innovate. Meet HotSwapping. It allows you to instantly warp to control any visible ally, almost like a ghost would possess a living soul. Take control of the sniper for a hawk's eye view of your prey, or swap into a tank's gunner for heavy artillery. The possibilities are huge, and Modern Combat really utilizes this gameplay twist to its fullest.

For the most part, the rest of the campaign is what you'd expect: you can fight as several soldier types, have a variety of missions to complete, drive a bunch of vehicles and all that jazz. It's got its quirks: your allies aren't the smartest pack of dogs, some objectives will get on your nerves, and you'll feel déjà vu often. Overall, though, the single-player campaign is still fulfilling. Don't be surprised if you play all the way through it.
