Tempest - Xbox Live Arcade

Maybe the XBLA version of Tempest is the answer to my nightly prayers? Let's find out! Produced by Atari in 1980, the first impression the arcade-goer had of Tempest was the game's housing - a triangular cabinet adorned with explosive interstellar artwork that screamed Over here, look at me! very, very loudly. The control panel, also covered in galactic art, contained a rotary spinner controller, a fire button, and the 'superzapper' button. This artistic extravagance has since made the Tempest cabinet a collector's dream, alongside the glow-in-the-dark Tron cabinet.

Space Giraffe is coming to Xbox 360 Live Arcade in 2007. Jeff Minter is giving you a first look at his kinda-sorta Tempest 2000 sequel.

Tempest developer Jeff Minter has shown off his new Xbox Live Arcade game, and as you'd expect from the man behind Neon (the Xbox 360's visualization software), it's looking rather trippy. The game, which most people are calling Space Giraffe is a spiritual successor to Tempest, which has you shooting things in space with an erm, giraffe. Of course coming from the mind of the llama-obsessed Minter, the game features a bright and colourful art-style and epileptic seizures certainly don't look too far away.
