Split/Second

PODCAST: The biggest release week of 2010?! Red Dead Galaxy 2: The Forgotten Sands of Alan Wake MEGA-Reviewed and much, much more!

Personally, I loved Split/Second. The review we posted may not have scored as high as I would’ve, but if you’re sick of the licensed car, simulation rigmarole as much as I am, trust me: Split/Second is your offensive breath of fresh air. It doesn’t fall back on the dated kart/combat mechanics of yesteryear either, and instead pretty much lets you play inside Jerry Bruckheimer’s brain!

Anyway, the whole shebang is presented like an episodic Hollywood production. We’d hate to see any of you wander into the proceedings like a deer in headlights, so we recommend firing up those Blu-ray players and prepping yourself for the carnage. When I asked the developers what films inspired them, and it turns out Michael Bay’s brightly lit, non-lethal film series of toys come to life fit the bill...

There's a worrying trend appearing on PSN and Xbox Live. Premium downloadable content which amounts to completing the game for you in exchange for cash. The prices may be small, but you're effectively removing challenge (and therefore longevity) while making your game more expensive. Surely that's crazy talk?

Split/Second: Velocity is the latest to offer an unlock code that opens up every car, track and event in the game, here for a total of 560 MS Points (£4.80/$7.00). Such an 'unlock all' command used to be implemented in games as a cheat code that you would enter at the title screen. But why do that when you can charge for it? Look at this craziness:

Whether you’re looking for horsepower-perfect simulations or futuristic car-combat, 2010 is already set to be the year of great racers. From realistic licensed rides and formula one racers to cartoony customized characters and arcadey powerups, a slew of four (and two) wheeled machines are roaring for your attention. Which ones will rev your RPMs? Peruse our garage menu, and feast your gear-brain on these lovely speed-junkies...
