Splatterhouse

A resurrection of the original side-scrolling horror and violence-fest, considered the catalyst for the birth of survival horror genre that we know today. No, Splatterhouse isn’t a great game. It’s not even a good game. It is better than bad, though. It annoys with some cheap deaths and some distant checkpoints, and it can grate with its “attitude,” but it’s also loveable in a scruffy way. It’s a game with no pretentions, knowing exactly what it is (and in case you forget, it includes all three original games).

Whoa, hey there Splatterhouse, long time no see. What’s it been? Seventeen years? Really? Well then, it may be no surprise if readers have never heard of you. For the uninitiated, Splatterhouse was a fairly shallow, side-scrolling beat-‘em-up originally in the arcade so very long ago, and then it moved on to consoles, spawning two sequels. Now we’re getting yet another “reboot” but this time of a positively ancient series... » Read Full Splatterhouse preview
E3 2010: Splatterhouse - Hands-on
Can its gore still make for a compelling experience in 2010?
Jun 15, 2010
It's been a while since Splatterhouse meant anything in gaming circles. Well, to be honest, it didn't mean too much in its heyday, either. Back in the days before age restrictions, it was the sort of thing that we morbidly fascinated by as children, with its over-the-top gore and chainsaw attacks. It's been almost two decades, but while the old games have lost almost all their shock factor, the name 'Splatterhouse' is still strong, even in today's climate of Saw and the like. And with all current gen's technical wizardry to draw from there's much potential here for greatness. We've finally gotten our hands on a playable demo of the 360 version and this is what we thought: » Read Full Splatterhouse preview

What God of War III did for scale, this does for gore

We’re used to playing killers in videogames (see: Kratos, Altair, Solid Snake), but there’s still something unsettling about Splatterhouse’s Rick. He’s a character who, for all intents and purposes, is Jason Voorhees: the notorious teen stabber and surprise hockey enthusiast from Friday the 13th. The similarities may be far less overt than in the side-scrolling ’80s/’90s originals, but you’re still playing a game wearing the facial garb of a mass murderer. » Read Full Splatterhouse preview
