Remember being yelled at by your mom when you stayed up
all night playing videogames? “What are you doing in there, with all the
shooting!?” she’d shout to a locked door. “Playing Counter-Strike, mom!” we’d scream
back, eyes never straying from the screen. “What for? Playing games will never get you anywhere! Why don’t you read
a book?” she’d yell one more time before being met with a blast of Sum41 from
our computer’s speakers.
Well, it’s time for prove her wrong, once and for all! To
celebrate the October launch of DICE’s Battlefield 3, EA and Virgin Gaming have
announced what they’re calling the “largest console videogame competition in
gaming history...

EA has finally opened up the Battlefield 3 beta, allowing anyone with an
interest in the title (that is, all of you who read past the headline) to
satisfy their curiosity. If you preordered the title on Origin and/or purchased
EA's Medal of Honor: Tier 1 Edition, you've had 48 hours with the title to
yourselves. Here's hoping you took the time to learn what button makes bullets
come out of the gun, because whether you're on PC, PSN or Xbox Live Gold, the
teeming hordes are about to descend upon your position...
One of the things that kept us going back to Need For Speed: Most Wanted was the innovative Autolog, which found a unique way to turn the racing game into a social experience. DICE's upcoming Battlefield 3 will have a similar feature, and if the trailer above is to be believed, it's going to take the concept even further. It's called Battlelog (get it?), and according to Executive Producer Patrick Bach, it's the "deepest persistence in the franchise's history..."
Much of DICE's new Battlefield 3 clip is stuff you could see for yourself by
downloading and joining the game's Open Beta – but if you're especially guarded
with your enthusiasm, there's plenty of suggestions as to what you might consider
being impressed by when you get online. There's a more practical purpose to the
video too, though: those new to the series' Rush Mode and character classes can
consider this a quick Battlefield primer. Will it stop new entrants getting
killed by more experienced players? Maybe not, though at least there's
something to aim towards...
EA and promo company Eventful are giving
gamers in one US city the opportunity to go hands-on with Battlefield 3 before
the game's official release later this month. The contest is part of Eventful's
'Demand It' service, wherein fans have until October 12th to vote on
which American city will receive the pre-release preview on October 19th...
Football
and first-person shooters now have one more thing in common besides both being
things beginning with the letter 'f.' Electronic Arts has announced a
Battlefield 3-themed reality show featuring NFL athletes Drew Brees (New
Orleans Saints), Clay Matthews (Green Bay Packers), Larry Fitzgerald (Arizona
Cardinals), and Jared Allen (Minnesota Vikings). Titled Battlefield 3:
Operation Gridiron, the show will follow the football men of war through combat
training before they’re challenged with completing a simulated operation based
on scenarios in Battlefield 3…
Battlefield
3’s still looking great. Today, Electronic Arts released a batch of new
screenshots ripped from the singleplayer campaign to show off DICE’s Frostbite
2 engine. Check them out and admire those graphics in our screenshot gallery!...
Calibur11’s
official Battlefield 3 Vault for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 is now
available to pre-order. Like the recently released Gears of War 3 Vault, the Battlefield-themed case is designed to
protect your console from the ravages of everyday gaming and claims to improve
cooling by increasing airflow to your system…
This
new Battlefield trailer is a minute well spent for anyone with an interest in
the real-time destruction physics of the game's Frostbite 2 engine. Or, to put
it another way, here's footage of lots of buildings within Battlefield 3
getting blown all to hell and looking suitably chaotic in the process. Enjoy...
EA's
latest promotion for Battlefield 3 pits fans against each other for the chance
to play the game ahead of launch in their city by voting to “demand” it. Working
in conjunction with Hollywood's Relativity Media and event-promo site Eventful,
EA will also offer Battlefield fans from the winning city an exclusive preview
of the feature film, Act of Valor. Here’s the first teaser for that movie…
