It's everyone's favorite time of the year again, when thousands of overcaffeinated journalists descend upon E3 with their live-blogged, 2000-word diatribes on the most minor of details. The objects of their unending speculation? The biggest games of the show, which, oddly enough, have been known to the gaming press for months and will surprise literally no one.

You’ll often hear about games lauded for their exceptional soundtracks. Some succeeded with NES-style bleeps, others had orchestral scores or fully licensed songs that lent credibility to a medium struggling to be more than a toy.

Unsung, underrated and unbelievably good. Sit back, relax, and enjoy.

From the stinging paper cuts delivered by their early Hanafuda cards, to their dual screen screammaker Contra 4, Nintendo have been responsible for a downpour of tricky titles to douse even the most resilient gamer's spirit. Join us as we descend Jacob's ladder through the circles of hell, into the belly of the Game Over beast.

I love F1 2010. But I also love OutRun. Sadly, it's impossible to play them both at the same time - thumbs get tangled, engine noises clash... it just isn't going to work. But what if the two were combined? What if you could play a single lap of Sao Paulo, overtaking the entire field with Magical Sound Shower blaring from the speakers? Driving a Ferrari, of course. Well, we've made that a reality. Just for one fleeting moment of racing perfection.

Is it stupid to sit in a pretend racing seat and turn a pretend steering wheel to control a pretend car? Yes, of course it is. I still do it, mind. I even spent hundreds of pounds to do it properly. Why? Because it's fun, especially when you're playing a game that's been designed with it in mind, like Gran Turismo 5. But the question is: Do wheels make that much of a difference, or can pads suffice? To find out, I asked Codemasters' Paul Jeal, senior producer on F1 2010.
