Will Tobey Maguire suit up for Robotech?

Well, we all knew it was coming. Thanks to Transformers’ barnstorming box office success, every studio and their uncle is scouring the world for giant robot-filled properties to shove into development, or plucking projects that have been languishing in limbo, brushing them down and getting the production factory clanking into life.

Warner Brothers has nabbed the rights to the anime classic Robotech, a ‘toon series from the ‘80s in which Earth based huge robot warriors on technology salvaged from a crashed alien spaceship. They need the ‘bots to battle several waves of nasty extraterrestrial invaders, with two young pilots taking a central role in the struggle.

Warners has recruited one major producer to get involved – Tobey Maguire, who may well end up in the pilot’s seat for one of the lead roles. For now, though, he just seems happy with the purchase. "We are very excited to bring Robotech to the big screen," Maguire blabbed to The Hollywood Reporter . "There is a rich mythology that will be a great foundation for a sophisticated, smart and entertaining film."

There’s no director attached yet, but Craig Zahler is the man challenged with turning the Japanese cartoon into that “sophisticated” big screen experience...
