GamerBlipsThe Wii maker has reported that its nine-month profit almost doubled, thanks to the massive sales of both DS and Wii. Sales rose 85 percent to a frightening 1.32 trillion yen. But now the company eyes Sony's worldwide sales record, currently held by PS2 in 2003.
Wii sales will probably help the company overtake Sony as the world's largest maker of consoles in '08, according to Daiwa Institute of Research.
"Nintendo couldn't supply enough Wiis to the North American market for the holiday shopping season," Soichiro Fukuda, an analyst at Nikko Citigroup, told Bloomberg.
"Next fiscal year will be crucial for the company as the Wii may top the sales record held by the PlayStation 2."
Fukuda says PlayStation 2 holds the annual sales record for game machines, with 22.5 million units sold in the year ended March 2003.
