Sony happy with Wii shortages

Wii shortages "fortuitous" for Sony as PS3 sales almost triple

Nov 15, 2007

Weekly sales of PS3 have almost tripled in US since the October 18 price drop, which Sony Chairman Howard Stringer describes as "the breakthrough we have been anticipating."

Sony sold over 100,000 PS3s on the week ending November 5, up from 30,000 to 40,000 in weeks preceding the price drop.

"It's a little fortuitous that the Wii is running out of hardware," he added, pointing out Nintendo's problems meeting demand in US and UK.

"We've been holding our breath," admits Stringer, who says that Sony has "taken so much heat over the year on PS3," considering the console underwhelming start.

"Finally, the turning point has been passed," he told the Associated Press.

Sounds like a happy chap, doesn't he. We'll see how Christmas sales pan out.
