Sometimes planning a vacation feels like too much work. Even if you manage to score enough time off, finagle a passport and find affordable deals for your flight and lodgings, theres still a good chance that youll get screwed by delays, lost luggage, overbooked rooms and locals with a powerful disdain for your loud Hawaiian shirts. While nothing can replace the thrill of visiting famous sites and learning about them via overpriced headset tour guides, weve noticed that some games have done an ... » Read More

Men in their mid 20s and 30s need to put down the Xbox controller and grow up, says writer Kay Hymowitz in an opinion piece published by the Dallas Morning News. Thanks to the emergence of pop culture such as television and gaming today's mid-20-something male "lingers happily, in a new hybrid state of semi-hormonal adolescence and responsible self-reliance," argues the article. In fact, compared to the last generation of young men, today's 20- to 30-year-old blokes can't be considered ... » Read More

In a blow to Wii owners praying for new games, a US retailer has listed the DS game Lost in Blue as a goer for Wii later this year. For those who didn't play it, Lost in Blue was an adventure game where players took control of teenager Keith who is stranded on a desert island with the visually impaired teen, Skye. During the day, Keith must explore the island, while gathering food and supplies to bring back to the cave he and Skye live in, so she can cook him his evening meal. The tasks ... » Read More

29th Jan, 2008 Its strange how things turn out. For generations, games have strived to drop their blocky, bleepy image of artificiality in order to compete with the more established media. Theyve made the move into 3D. Theyve spent year after year tweaking their polygon counts and deepening their textures like a preening teenager on a Friday night. Cinematic cut scenes sometimes seem to take up as much disc space as the gameplay, and lush, movie-style soundtracks now take full advantage of DVD ... » Read More

You know the formula. A pure-hearted beauty falls into the evil grasp of some snarling, spitting, mustache-twirling megalomaniac. A noble hero, driven by honor, courage and - let's face it - hormones, rushes to her aid. A brief kiss ensues and, before you can say sequel, the hapless lady has stumbled into imminent danger all over again. Tale as old as time... classic "damsel in distress." Except sometimes, the damsel isn't worth the damn trouble. ... » Read More

Film-to-game conversions can work, but videogame plots are too weak to make for decent films, says the LA Times. In a feature about the rules of movie making, LA Times quoted screenwriter, Josh Olson, - who was working on the Halo film - as saying that games "have aimless cycles. You go to A, shoot some monsters, then go to B, then start over and do it again." Obviously the film has to do a little more than that, but LA Times thinks directors should stop trying. "Step away from the video ... » Read More

Sega will soon be distributing games from its 8-bit Master System console through Nintendo's Virtual Console. The titles will unsurprisingly be rolled out mostly in Japan, but European and American gamers can expect to get their hands on the first batch sometime after February. The first titles available through the service will be action game Fist of the North Star and cute looking Fantasy Zone, costing 600 and 500 Wii points respectively. Source: PlusD Courtesy of CVG. To date Activision's first James Bond game has surrounded by plenty of rumour and gossip, so it seems right to dollop an extra bit of speculation on top: Will it be called Quantum of Solace? Well, that's the just-confirmed name of the next Bond movie, which will find Daniel Craig reprising his role as the secret agent after his superb debut in Casino Royale. A minute of footage from the new film has been shown at a press conference, the footage including a scene where 007 swings around on a ... » Read More

The Wii maker has reported that its nine-month profit almost doubled, thanks to the massive sales of both DS and Wii. Sales rose 85 percent to a frightening 1.32 trillion yen. But now the company eyes Sony's worldwide sales record, currently held by PS2 in 2003. Wii sales will probably help the company overtake Sony as the world's largest maker of consoles in '08, according to Daiwa Institute of Research. Famitsu figures reveal that the Wii has broken the five million sales mark in Japan - in just sixty weeks since its launch. This not only makes Iwata's wallet fatter than Santa Claus, but it also makes the Wii the fastest-selling home console in Nintendo history so far. In comparison, the GameCube only managed 1.68 million units in the same time frame. N64 did 2.31 million, and the Super NES hit a respectable 3.59 million sales, according to the VGChartz report. While no firm NES figures ... » Read More

Note: This article is intentionally magniloquent and bombastic. Read it at the risk of becoming irritated and rebutting it in a forum, blog, or on Digg. What is a first-person game? Third-person? Most can easily identify these terms as referring to a games “camera” and how it relates to the virtual physical space of the game world. Also utilized are omnipresent viewpoints (strategy games), and the somewhat outdated second-person (text adventures). In literary terms, however, the ... » Read More

January 23, 2008 If you've been playing games for a while, you will likely have heard of Treasure. This revered developer has created some of the best shooting games ever. True, it also gave the world Dynamite Headdy, but you gotta take the rough with the smooth. Gunstar Heroes, Ikaruga, Alien Soldier, Bangai-O - all magnificent titles in many ways. But all pale in comparison to the company's magnum opus, Radiant Silvergun. Released in 1998 on Sega's dying Saturn console, the game was never ... » Read More

What do Solid Snake, Lara Croft and Samus Aran all have in common? They dress for success. Their own costume, be it custom-built spacesuit or bottomless backpack, is directly related to their adventuresome profession. No matter the situation, these heroes are loaded with gadgets, training and expertise that'll see them through to the end. But not all game characters are created equal. A great many appear to have no practical application other than "the boss says this guy stays in the game." ... » Read More

Nintendo's doing pretty well. Did you know that Nintendo accounted for 52 percent of all hardware systems sold in 2007? That's more than all other manufacturers combined, we're told, to rub in the face of its rivals. DS was the top-selling US system, with nearly 8.5 million sold, including more than four million in November and December alone. Wii placed second, with nearly 6.3 million sold over the year, more than 2.3 million of which sold in the final two months. Obviously that figure would ... » Read More
