Wii - Wii Sports - Nintendo issues dig at Microsoft and Halo 3 UK boss claims Wii Sports will be defining game of this generation.

Nintendo has launched a thinly veiled dig at Microsoft and its record breaking launch of blockbuster FPS Halo 3.

Speaking at a press conference this morning in London, David Yarnton, general manager of Nintendo UK, said: "For all the recent talk of record breaking entertainment launches, it might just be that the defining and most influential video game of this generation is a simple game of tennis that the whole family can gather around and play and enjoy together."

Although Yarnton didn't mention Halo 3 or Wii Sports by name, the "record breaking entertainment launch" is obviously a reference to Halo 3 and the "simple game of tennis" is clearly Wii Sports.

Wii - Wii Sports - Nintendo's Best-Selling Wii Games: Six First-Party Million Sellers Nintendo revealed six first party-published Wii games that have sold over a million copies worldwide on October 26. IGN reports five out of the six:

1. Wii Sports: 11.1 million
2. Wii Play: 6.3 million
3. Mario Party 8: 2.9 million
4. Big Brain Academy: Wii Degree: 1.8 million
5. Mario Strikers Charged: 1.3 million

IGN has apparently made an error and omitted the sixth title. According to user comments at IGN and Wikipedia, the missing title could be either The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (3.61 million), Wario Ware: Smooth Moves (1.82 million), or Super Paper Mario (1.74 million).

Wii - Wii Sports - Wii becomes a new tool for hospital rehab "There are a lot of things Barbara Everlith can't do since she suffered a stroke. Grasping objects with her left hand doesn't come as easily as it used to. She can't stand or walk as steadily as she once did.

But there's one thing that Everlith, who lives in Stratford, can do. She can play tennis. Sort of."

Connecticut Post's Amanda Cuba reports for the Associated Press that hospitals in the U.S. and Canada are incorporating the Wii into their physical therapy programs.

Wii - Wii Sports - Wii-hab: Rehabilitating the Seriously Injured Minneapolis-based CBS affiliate WCCO reported on October 13 that the Sister Kenny Rehabilitation Institute in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA, has been using the Wii in its physical rehabilitation program with tremendous success. The institute calls the program "Wii-hab" and uses the Wii's freeform motion controls as "a safe but realistic way to retrain" the bodies of people suffering from serious injury.

Therapists reported that Wii-hab is working.

"I've seen spinal cord patients really regain the ability to move - gain movement from everything that help them wash their face, brush their teeth, to get in and out of the chair to start a car," said Occupational Therapist Jennifer Smith.

The Sister Kenny Research Center is tracking the results of "Wii-hab" and may report their findings next year.

Wii - Wii Sports - Seniors strike it healthy with virtual bowling CanWest News Service (Canada) reports how Nintendo Wii and DS are helping seniors and retirees to stay physically and mentally healthy while bonding with their friends, children and grandchildren.

"Friday is bowling night at the Millennium Trail Manor retirement home, when up to 20 residents gather for some friendly competition on the (bowling) lanes... They're going to try boxing next. There's no risk of bruised knuckles or broken noses, though, because the residents play the sports on the Wii..."

"Dr. Sharon Cohen has incorporated Brain Age (DS) into treatment programs for patients with Alzheimer's and dementia at the Toronto Memory Clinic. The games really do offer mental callisthenics, she says..."

Wii - Wii Sports - Prediction: No More Wii Sports Included With Wii's "I've been thinking this for quite some time and now am pretty much confident this is going to happen. Back at E3 Nintendo said that all future Wii's from November (I think) will have the gun attachment packaged into the main £180 box. The Zelda Cross Bow training is not really a game as it's so small and apart from the hardcore Zelda fans no-one is really going to care about it - I suspect the only reason it's packaged with the gun is to stop people complaining about how they brought a Wii and now have to shell out extra for an attachment when if they had waited they would have had it free."

Wii - Wii Sports - Dev: Top Spin won't have legless, unfinished characters like Wii Sports PAM's senior producer Jean-Yves Patay has explained that the firm's upcoming Topspin Tennis for the Nintendo Wii will topple the console's tennis crown contested solely by Wii Sports at present.

"I have a son that has lots of fun with Wii Sports", said Patay, but "Topspin on Wii will have completely different play mechanic and a different focus. There'll be no big heads and no players without legs," he said, as he went on to explain why Topspin will be a more "finished game."

Nintendic isn't so sure Payat has heard the full story about Wii Sports when he implies that its legless players exhibit an unfinished game. Shigeru Miyamoto has previously explained that the design of the Mii characters are based on Kokeshi, a form of Japanese doll used as souvenir gifts in Japan.
