Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam

It's a different direction for the Birdman, and it's a good one

DS gamers have already had their fill of Downhill Jam - it came out over a month ago and features much of the same gameplay. The major difference for the Wii version is the pyramid structure of the levels. Each challenge you beat gives you points for bronze, silver and gold-level victories. The more points you earn, the more stat-boosting boards you can buy, plus unlock nauseating new raceways like Rome, Rio or the mountainous Macchu Picchu.

You get a few areas not seen in the DS version, but by and large this is the same game - meaning the DS' troubles with getting turned around are still here. If you get hit or take a turn too sharp and bump into something, simple movements to get back on track is harder than they should be.

The goal variation doesn’t change much from the very first tier of challenges. It's always a race, a slalom run, a trick-a-thon or some special test like hitting the most pedestrians. It would've been nice to see something new towards the end, but we imagine there's only so much you can do with a skateboard.

The cast of, ahem, "characters" ranges from the Goth chick to the preppy chick to the stoned dude to the... well you get the picture. Unlike all the other Tony games (even the DS Jam ), you don't up their stats by spending ability points. Instead, unlockable boards offer changes in turning, speed and all the other stuff you'd expect to see. A custom character can also be created and nurtured through the skating process. Nothing fancy, just covering the necessary bases.
