Activision is doing a good thing that is not evil or greedy

As one of gaming's biggest money bags publishers, killer of studios and rampant peddler of endless sequels, Activision is regarded as being the industry villain, with CEO Bobby Kotick currently ranking somewhere between Emperor Palpatine and Rupert Murdoch in the popularity stakes. Gamers love to rag on Activision. And normally with some justification. But look here - Activision is doing something good. It is giving money to independent game developers. Not for drowning kittens or other despicable schemes, but to help them make good independent games.

If you haven’t picked up a copy of Tony Hawk: Shred yet, you’re not alone. The latest entry in the Tony Hawk series is struggling at retail, selling only 3,000 copies during its first week of sale. According to Cowan and Company analyst Doug Creutz, Shred was a “virtual no-show.” The low sales suggest that the eleventh official Tony Hawk game may be the last…

Proving that he’s an eternal optimist, Tony Hawk is excited for the sequel to Tony Hawk: Ride, Tony Hawk: Shred. In an interview with the UK’s Official Nintendo Magazine, Hawk answered some questions about Ride's shortcomings: "The one thing we needed to improve was software integration and we have immensely. I think when people see the improvements they'll be very impressed." Given Ride’s average Metacritic score of 44, “The one thing we needed to improve ” might be the understatement of the year.
