As one of gaming's biggest money bags publishers, killer of studios and rampant peddler of endless sequels, Activision is regarded as being the industry villain, with CEO Bobby Kotick currently ranking somewhere between Emperor Palpatine and Rupert Murdoch in the popularity stakes. Gamers love to rag on Activision. And normally with some justification. But look here - Activision is doing something good. It is giving money to independent game developers. Not for drowning kittens or other despicable schemes, but to help them make good independent games.

Activision is on a killing streak with franchises today. Along with cancelling Guitar Hero and True Crime, word has it that the company is shelving Tony Hawk's skateboarding games as well.

The University of Calgary made kids play video games for a couple years, with some very positive results.

Proving that he’s an eternal optimist, Tony Hawk is excited for the sequel to Tony Hawk: Ride, Tony Hawk: Shred. In an interview with the UK’s Official Nintendo Magazine, Hawk answered some questions about Ride's shortcomings: "The one thing we needed to improve was software integration and we have immensely. I think when people see the improvements they'll be very impressed." Given Ride’s average Metacritic score of 44, “The one thing we needed to improve ” might be the understatement of the year.
