The Golden Compass

Lock up your deities!

By the way - we really do approach these kiddie movie tie-ins with open minds, you know. But there's no fun in having your optimism completely trampled in this way, time after time. The Golden Compass is all the uglier on the Wii, filled with all the awful trademarks of an unfinished game. Insipid character and design, sloppy control, visual slowdown and - wouldn't you know it - the game actually crashed on us. Motion controls could have been the game's one redeeming quality, yet unsurprisingly, it's useless in combat and agonizingly unresponsive during Lyra's balance missions. Avoid at all costs

You'll love
  • Lots of action
  • It's got armored bears
  • Good source material
You'll hate
  • Butt-ugly graphics
  • Terrible level design
  • It crashed on us... loudly
