Surfs Up is solidly average, but not bad for it. You build up experience doing tricks, jumping off and grinding along waves and island rails. Theres no Story mode - you could think of it as Tony Hawks Penguin Jam with fewer levels and a less interesting range of moves. All the emphasis is on the racing which, while lacking any depth, is strangely pleasing. You steer with the analog stick and do tricks with the D-pad, following the same formula through every level. Surfing games have never been done quite right, but Ubisoft Montreal (Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory) will be taking another stab at it this summer with Surfs Up, based on Sony Pictures upcoming CG surfing flick of the same name.
