OnAxis reports USA Today recently let out their list for the top eight promising games for 2008. Out of the eight games, four are for the PLAYSTATION 3, two on the Xbox 360, two on the Wii, and one on the PC.

Last year, video gamers were greeted with a bounty of top-notch titles, from Halo 3 to Super Mario Galaxy. Can enthusiasts expect more of the same? Here's eight promising games for 2008.

IGN reports that Nintendo may just have a hit on its hands with this "Smash Brothers" game. Released in Japan earlier today, Smash Bros. got masses of consumers to line up outside of retailers prior to opening time -- a rare site for a game that isn't Dragon Quest or Final Fantasy.

Your IGN Japan headquarters near Tokyo's Shibuya train station has walkable access to two large Bic Camera outlets. While both managed lines of maybe a dozen or so for Wii Fit late last year, the scene for Smash Bros. today was far more hectic. At opening time, the larger of the two shops had at least one hundred people lined up to purchase the game from a special register that had been set up in the store front. Going up to the game section on the fourth floor, we found another 50 lined up there, most with Smash Bros. in hand.

Destructoid recently told you about potential Super Smash Bros. Brawl shortages for the game's Japanese launch, but now an update from importer National Console Support makes the situation look more like a short delay.

They are to receive the initial shipments of SSBB this Thursday, and while they were able to obtain more copies than they originally expected, it looks like some preorder customers will have to wait another week. The importer's update from yesterday said that "Nintendo will only ship 25% of the game this week due to a production shortage," though more will be available next week. Phew!

The remainder of our Smash Bros X shipments are scheduled to arrive no later than Wednesday or Thursday of next week and we'll be able to fill all remaining preorders and any new orders at that time.

Kotaku writes: "Earlier, we brought news of a minor Super Smash Bros. Brawl bug. The screen goes black and displays an error message that the game cannot be booted. However, the bug doesn't actually effect the game and can be ignored. Another retail-minded site Game no Urabanashi confirms this rumor, point out that the error message occurs when the game is first started up on consoles that haven't been updated since last summer.

Game no Urabanashi doesn't see the bug as a huge problem as it can be corrected, but does point out that it could be an issue if not all customers are aware of it. The Nintendo flier that stores will apparently be giving out has popped up online. This looks like pretty good confirmation, but we're still going to call this a rumor until we're able to verify for ourselves when SSBB drops this Thursday in Japan. For a game that's been delayed repeatedly, this seems, well, pretty shitty. If this is true, why is Nintendo, known for its impeccable quality, willing to ship its biggest title with a bug? Then again, Paper Mario had a bug and the DS Lite had hinge cracks, so. One thing you can bet, Nintendo would've never shipped Wii Fit with a bug. No way in hell.

Japanese game site ORE-N0-WEB 3rd i floats the rumor that Super Smash Bros. Brawl is shipping with a showstopping bug. Before we dive in, a bit about that site: It's run by someone who claims to a gaming insider (perhaps a game shop owner). The site mentions that Japanese retailers are getting notices that SSBB is shipping with a minor bug that displays an error message that the game cannot be booted.

Gamertell via Brawl Central reports that Kiosks in Japan are having demos of the title set up this weekend. There have also been recent rumors floating around the internet that US gamers will soon be sampling the game as well.

Brawl Central reported that GameStop stores will be receiving demos of Super Smash Brothers Brawl very soon. A source confided to the site's writer that the game demos may be at GameStop Wii kiosks by next week. The author of the article then called local GameStop, which confirmed that the demos could be available by then. I guess this means its time to start stalking GameStop stores.
