Super Mario Galaxy

Super Mario Galaxy

New info on Mario's other game of the year

The big question left by the footage is: why? Just what is Mario doing in the cold depths of space, leaping from planet to planet? And how does he do it without his body freezing/face exploding?

We know that Mario isn't the place to go looking for narrative depth -cleaning up after a sneaky painter is hardly Pulitzer Prize-winning stuff - but he needs motivation nonetheless. As Mario makes his way across the gloriously oozy lava world, a massive planet collision looms on the horizon - could he be stabilizing the galaxy, via the power of jumping and going waa-hooo? Similarly, being shot from star portal to star portal leaves streaks of blue trailing across the sky - connecting stars has connotations of forming constellations; another act of "galaxy forming."

Most heartening for hardcore fans is that for every dazzling new innovation on display, there’s an old face from Mario’s back-catalog waiting on the next planetoid. From simple recurring foes - Petey Piranha, Bullet Bills, Wiggler and Whomps - to early hints of underwater sections, Nintendo has found a way of getting all those staple Mario elements into orbit. We can’t wait to join them when Galaxy is released - definitely released - later this year.
