A concept so pure requires a hero of similar purity. Gone is the lumbering FLUDD of Super Mario Sunshine - Mario is free to twirl, dance and pirouette as only a pot-bellied plumber knows how. Along with the classic "I’m-a-little-plane" outstretched arm flight maneuver, we’ve seen him leap from a robotic noggin pinning his arms to his sides as he streamlines himself for extra height - this is his most determined bounding yet.
And while his arcing flight is blisteringly smooth and stylish, we much prefer its gyroscope twists as Mario’s hurled across space - it’s the most helpless he’s ever been and it’s utterly adorable. Another new addition to the mustachioed tumbler’s repertoire is a one-handed twirl whilst gripping a pink flower - perfect for generating lift whilst floating to those hard to reach places.
But it doesn’t end with leaping and flower holding. There’s the remote pointer on hand to drag Mario from star to star - now revealed to be at the heart of some diabolical obstacle traversing as you attempt to prevent his dungarees from being singed when he passes between shrunken supernovas. Fireballs are belched out, different routes tempt you and those last few coins heckle you just out of reach - it’s great to finally see the pointer find a proper place in a platforming control scheme.
