Wii Review
Nov 8, 2007 There's no point trying to pigeonhole Mario - a simple hold on Z and a tap of A, and he'll backflip straight out - but most people tend to refer to his 3D outings as 'playgrounds'. True, levels are littered with holes to leap, slides to pelt down and obstacles to ooh, ahh, waa-hoo over - but funny no one mentions wasted space. Because whenever there's a space for running, for leaping, or just an empty space, in comes Miyamoto with his design chisel. Chipping away everything around ...

Six years ago, the GameCube launched with the very first Super Monkey Ball. Since then, we've seen the glass-encased primates weave their way through countless floating mazes, only to show up in yet another game with similar puzzles to solve. Now there's Banana Blitz. With so many monkey options out there (spanning nearly every platform you can think of), what makes this one worth checking out? Actual new content. Up until now - with the heartbreakingly noteworthy exception of the failed ...

How is it that the GameCube and Wii both launched without a Mario game? Somehow it happened, and here we are, months after Wii took the world by surprise and we're just now seeing the iconic mascot appear on the system. To make things even weirder, it's not a 3D platformer or sports game debut, either. Nope, it's a new entry in the RPG-lite Paper Mario series, the last of which landed in 2004. But in order to make the game more digestible to the non-RPG fan, Super Paper Mario plays more like a ...

Wii - Super Smash Bros. Brawl - Super Smash Bros. Brawl There's practically no reason to offer a review of Super Smash Bros. Brawl. It's going to sell millions upon millions of copies regardless of what anyone says. We all know it's phenomenally fun and destined to become Wii's biggest game of all time, so what else should a review even bother to say? Spend 500 words arguing about wave dashing or meteor smashes? Nah, we'll just say "buy this immediately" and let you get back to smashing. ...

Wii Review
The golf in Wii Sports is surprisingly fun, but it's hardly deep or realistic. Along with every other sport represented in the game, it plays more like an appetizer - a fun little sample of what can and should be expected from Wii sports titles in the future. The more you play it, the more you'll wish for a bigger and fuller golf simulator. Super Swing Golf is the answer to that wish. Though certainly not perfect, it manages to fulfill the potential shown in Wii Sports Golf, delivering a ...

Wii Review
Dec 14, 2007 Despite some nagging annoyances, the original Super Swing Golf impressed us with its surprising depth and flawless motion swing. It handily beat the option-light Wii Sports golf, but with two (!) Tiger Woods titles released in the last year (and the promising We Love Golf on the horizon), we couldn't take this blandly titled sequel against the field based solely on its heritage. Luckily, we don't have to. Though fans of the original will experience a severe case of ...

Wii Review
Surfs Up is solidly average, but not bad for it. You build up experience doing tricks, jumping off and grinding along waves and island rails. Theres no Story mode - you could think of it as Tony Hawks Penguin Jam with fewer levels and a less interesting range of moves. All the emphasis is on the racing which, while lacking any depth, is strangely pleasing. You steer with the analog stick and do tricks with the D-pad, following the same formula through every level. Unsurprising but ...

Wii - Tak and the Guardians of Gross - Tak and the Guardians of Gross

Shadow of the Colossus is the unlikely inspiration for this, the fourth game starring generically tribal platforming star Tak. This time, the loinclothed bonehead has accidentally released four giant ‘Grosstrosities’ upon the world, and it’s up to him to bring these lumbering maniacs to heel. ...

Wii - Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World - Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World

Dawn of the New World is a tale of two realms caught in a parasitic balancing act that threatens to destroy both worlds forever. Fitting then that the gameplay suffers from the same abrasive dichotomy, where half the ideas succeed while the other half sucks the life out of the whole project. ...

Clearly bent on taking over the world, the Tamagotchi critters are using a Wii multiplayer board game to decide on a President to lead them into battle. Up to four people can play, with the AI filling in if you (surely inexplicably) find yourself playing Tamagotchi on your own. Start by shaking the remote to throw a die, and move around the board to land on a square where: a) youre rewarded for doing nothing at all, b) youre penalised for doing nothing at all, c) youll get richer after watching ...
