411mania talks about this week's game releases. Highlights include Phantom Brave, C.O.R.E, Fossil Fighters, and Madden.

On Phantom Brave, 411mania writes: "We Meet Again is an update to the original Phantom Brave for the PS2. As it was the game that immediately followed Disgaea, it had a lot to live up to when it was first released back in 2004. Though the SRPG contained many similarities to its predecessor, many fans felt that it strayed a little too much from what made Disgaea a hit. Detractors cite the more serious story as well as the various gameplay changes as their main complaints. However, those who actually gave the game a chance found a lot of the changes to their liking. The absence of the grid system, for example, allowed for more freedom when positioning characters. In addition, the Confine system, whereby the souls of the playable characters must be "confined" to objects on the field in order to take physical form, forced players to put more thought into when and where to use each character. It's not an exact clone of Disgaea, but in this case, that isn't such a bad thing."

Just because a game gets rated 'Mature' doesn't mean it's going to be grown up and serious and any better than something deemed suitable for younger gamers. However, chances are it is probably going to be more fun, simply because it'll have more violence, more sexy, more swearing, more alcohol. And all of those things, as any responsible adult will tell you, are the main ingredients for a good time. In our opinion, the following games could ...

You have your base power, you have your same-type attack-bonus (STAB), you have your enemy's super-effective weakness, and so on. There are a few moves that don't follow the standard formulae, but instead follow a rather unusual set of rules to calculate damage. This week's Pokemusings takes a look at some of these moves: Grass Knot, Punishment and Trump Card. If you don't ...

We can't stress the enormous difference between singles' and doubles' strategy. They truly require different mindsets, strategies, and moves. Whether you're playing two on two with a friend in Diamond/Pearl or playing against the AI in Pokemon Battle Revolution, doubles battles can be pretty challenging and lots of fun. This week, we're going over some moves that ...

As proud owners of Plusle and Minun salt-and-pepper shakers, as well as a Pokemon ramen bowl, we've bought into Pokemon consumerism, quite literally. In addition to everyday knickknacks, there are a slew of Pokemon devices that we'll never get the chance to own.

There are some Pokemon that are just a pain in the butt to catch - legendaries, Pokemon that run around the map, honey tree Pokemon, etc. Thankfully, as the Pokemon games have progressed, many of these Pokemon are much easier to catch in Diamond/Pearl than they were in the forerunners. Still, it makes us reminisce about the good old days. We had our fair share of frustrations back then, but it all seems a bit funny now. Coming up with new and exciting Pokemon is not easy, but the designers have managed to keep things fresh with most of the 493 critters they've concocted. That said, there are a number of Pokemon that are just boring, banal, and redundant. Yes, it's the time of the year again - the overly commercialized holiday where people get gouged for flowers, chocolates, jewelry, and more. Despite any protestations we might have against this holiday (you should love your loved ones every day!), we thought it would be a good time take a look at some great Pokemon couples. We're not talking about obvious ones like Latios and Latias. We're going to spend this ...
First off, the title of this week's Pokemusings was ripped from a Living Colour song. If you don't know it, do yourself a favor and check out this album. It's excellent and should be part of your musical education. Now, getting back to the matter at hand, this week's column is about the mysterious attack known as Hidden Power. While some players understand this arcane attack, many do not. Hidden Power can be extremely useful in terms of rounding out your Pokemon's attacks and surprising your ...
Our resident Pokemon masters are back from holiday hiatus! We hope that everyone had an excellent holiday and a fine new year's celebration. Now that we're a hair into 2008, we thought it would be an excellent time to go over five Pokemon resolutions everyone should make for 2008. While a lot of you out there take exemplary care of your Pokemon, there's always something all of us could be doing better. Hopefully this list will inspire or remind you to do something new in the world of ...
Dec 20, 2007

For our last issue of Pokemusings in 2007, we're going to talk about your favorite Pokemon. The peeps in our Pokemon general discussion forums have been chatting up a storm, telling us who their favorite Pokemon is and why. We were surprised at how diverse the answers were. We thought for sure that everyone would just favor gnarly dragons, but you guys selected a wide variety of Pokemon. Now let's see what some of the choices ...
'Tis the season for retailer gouging, horrendous holiday movies (hello Fred Claus), and shoulder dislocations due to overcrowded malls. Don't let that get in the way of shopping for your favorite Pokemon pals! There's still lots of time to pick up some great Pokemon-related gifts. While any self-respecting trainer has a healthy supply of Pokemon games, we're going to take a look at some toys, shirts, and books that are sure to brighten up a Pokemon fan's holidays. And if you've ...
For this week's Pokemusings, we're answering some of your questions! A bunch of peeps in our Pokemon general discussion forums had some queries for us and we consulted our Pokemon think tank to fish up the answers. From Pokemon breeding to Ash Ketchum's sexuality to Pokemon poop, we have our faithful Pokemusings readers covered. Now onto the first question!

Vesuvis029: Is there a way to breed Pokemon and get the nature you want?

Answer: Yes, but it's not an exact method. ...
Our coverage of Pokemon movies continues! In the last issue of Pokemusings, we went over the dregs -- Pokemon movies that suck. It was a bleak and depressing issue, but we're moving on to bigger, brighter, and better things this week. This time around we'll be talking about three Pokemon movies that are excellent. In no particular order, here are the ones we thought were best.

Pokemon: The Movie 2000

Plot: Some jerkwad collector gets extremely overzealous and attempts to capture ...
Halloween is right around the corner and we thought it would be a great time to look at five really scary Pokemon. It would be easy to go with some obviously frightening Pokes (Rayquaza, Mewtwo) or some that are just flat-out ugly (Swampert, Electivire). Instead, we're going to take a look at five Pokemon that weren't meant to be scary, but for some reason or another scare the crap out of us. Prepare for this list of "five unintentionally scary ...
Bug Pokemon get no love. It's easy to understand why. In every Pokemon game - whether the adventure starts in Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, or Sinnoh - the early goings have tons of weak bugs for your team to slaughter. With a staple of immensely non-threatening Pokemon like Kakuna, Weedil, Metapod and Caterpie abundant in the early stages of every Pokemon game, players are conditioned to think that bug Pokemon suck. This is a shame, since there are so many awesome bug Pokemon out there. This week, ...
Ever wondered what it would be like to be a Pokemon designer? Ever thought you could do better than the professionals? We love Pokemon, but let's face it - some of them could have been designed a little more creatively - Pidgey, Taillow, Starly... come on, right?

Well, now's your chance to show the world what you've got. Design your ultimate Pokemon from scratch, and your creation could be featured in a special article on GamesRadar. Judging by the creative minds in our Pokemon ...
Oct 11, 2007

As much as we love Pokemon - enough to devote thousands of hours to the series, collectively - the games are far from perfect. While we've enjoyed so much of our time in Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, and Sinnoh, there were a few aspects of our adventures that drove us batty. In this week's Pokemusings, we're going to go to that dark, angry, and bitter place by venting about five things we can't stand about the mainline Pokemon games.

1) The Run Button - Holding down a button to run was ...
When judging Pokemon, a good Pokemon trainer takes many things into account, like stats, type weaknesses, abilities, and the Pokemon's move pool. But these attributes don't always tell the whole story. Sometimes, you have to also consider aesthetics when choosing which Pokemon is right for you. In other words, you want you Pokemon to look cool while it's kicking ass.

With that in mind, we present our list of the fugliest Pokemon to ever strike fear in the hearts' of their ...
For the last few weeks, the best of the best in our Pokemon Forums have been squaring off to determine who the true GamesRadar Pokemon Champion really is. Our forums are full of Pokemon fans who really know their stuff, but in the end there could be only one true Pokemon Champion.

This month, we would like to congratulate jimbo42292 as the ultra-victorious winner of the Official GamesRadar Pokemon Tournament. He fought through many tough battles to earn the title of true Pokemon ...
Singles tennis and doubles tennis might as well be different games. Sure, the court is the same, the balls are the same, and the net is the same, but a doubles match requires a different mentality and subset of skills than its more popular sibling. The same holds true for Pokemon battles. The arenas are the same, the moves are the same, and the Pokemon are the same. However, the 2v2 style adds a nice layer of strategy and requires you to put a little more thought in your Pokemon ...
Natures have negligible impact in beating the single-player modes in the Pokemon role-playing games, but they are an enormous facet of competitive play. Longtime competitive Pokemon trainers know how vital having the right nature is, but those new to the scene might not know enough about them. In this week's edition of Pokemusings, we're going to look at various natures and tell you how to use them to your advantage. To start, take a look at this nifty chart the GamesRadar artisans have ...
Our coverage of weather effects in Pokemon battles concludes in this week's issue of Pokemusings. We've already gone through sunlight, rain, and sand. Now it's time to examine hail. While not as common as the other weather effects, hail has some pretty interesting and effective uses. Since it's decidedly on the underused side, building a team around hail is a great way to throw your opponents a ...
Pokemon Battle Revolution is barely a game. It's a hollow shell that you're supposed to fill with your own Pokemon from games you've already spent hundreds of hours on. Basically, the game exists only so you can battle Pokemon on Wii, in 3D, and marvel at the GameCube-level visuals. In other words, it's extremely boring to play for any length of time.

We had to endure PBR for countless hours so that our massively cool Pokedex could have updated 3D screens of all 493 critters. After spending ...
Aug 30, 2007

Controlling the weather has always been an integral part of competitive combat strategies in Pokemon. With the new tweaks in Diamond/Pearl, manipulating the weather to your advantage has become more important than ever. Over the next few weeks, we're going to talk about various weather effects, what they do, and how to take advantage of them. First up, we're going to cover that mass of incandescent gas (a gigantic nuclear furnace) known as the sun.

First off, there are two ways ...
The very first starter of the very first game. Pokemon 001 didnt become popular just for being the first, however, as its move set and evolutions make it a constant favorite.
Aug 23, 2007

Hold items are absolutely essential for Pokemon battles. Pretty much every Pokemon trainer out there knows the value of pairing the right hold item with the right Pokemon. What many players don't know is that hold items are equally valuable for obtaining hard-to-catch Pokemon and completing your Pokedex. In this week's issue of Pokemusings, we're going to take a look at some of the Pokemon you can generate using the Daycare Center in Solaceon City in conjunction with specific hold ...
Okay! After playing some name games in the last issue of Pokemusings, we head back into the super serious (not really) world of EV training. In case you've missed it (and shame on you if you did!), we've already gone over the basics and recommended places to EV train. This week, we're going to go over some items that will maximize your EV efforts.

If you've beaten the Elite Four, then you'll have access to the Battle Tower. Not only is this a great place to hone your competitive-battling ...
Naming your Pokemon is a vital but often overlooked part of the Pokemon games. Hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of people play Pokemon games without giving any thought to naming the Pokemon they catch. This, we think, is criminal. After all, you don't name your dog "Dog" or your cat "Cat." So why should you stick with species names like Charmander, Pikachu, or Togepi?!?

We understand that Ash and his friends do this in the animated series so that viewers can learn the names of each ...
We've been playing a lot of Pokemon recently. But is it too much? Here's how to tell. If any of the following sound familiar, it might be time to take a break. Be honest now...

1) You hear the level up chime in your head when you accomplish an everyday task

2) You avoid long grass or take the shortest route through it when you're feeling fatigued

3) You spray insect repellent on your clothes and walk with confidence for 100 paces

4) You tap your watch repeatedly in the hope it will reveal ...
Last week, we gave you the basics of EV training - the complex stat-boosting system in Pokemon that works in a behind-the-scenes way. While it might be tough to grasp initially, EV training is well worth the effort. You'll be making your pokemon the best that they can be if you're mindful about the types of pokemon they defeat. This week's installment of Pokemusings will help your EV efforts by letting you know some excellent places for training in Pokemon Diamond/Pearl.

Many people are under the impression that Pokemon is nothing more than a series of role-playing games geared toward youngsters. This is partially true. The Pokemon games are superbly-crafted titles that appeal to children of all ages. They're fun games that are easy for players of all skill levels to enjoy. Underneath it all is an amazingly complex system that most players don't even know about. It's called EV training.

EV training can make an enormous difference in how strong your Pokemon ...
At around 193 million units versus Pokémons 155 million, Mario may have sold more games overall, but considering the wide variety of stuff he stars in and the length of time hes been around; Pokémon is arguably the more significant videogame phenomenon.

Pikachu and the gang have enjoyed peaks and endured troughs since the original games 1996 Japanese debut, but no matter how many times people have tried to write off Pokémon, it remains hugely popular. Its a cultural ...
Using legendary Pokemon in battles is a piece of cake. Their stats are higher than normal and their move pools are generally broader than those of standard Pokemon. Even without proper training and with an unbalanced move set, it's pretty easy to win a battle using legendary Pokemon. You don't need a whole lot of skill to win this way.

If you're a Pokemon master in the making then you're probably working hard at training standard Pokemon. Being victorious with regular Pokemon is a true ...
