Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End - hands-on

Shake the Wiimote to stagger like Cap'n Jack

Shaking the remote horizontally and vertically will create light and heavy attacks respectively. Combine your attacks to chain together a combo that can end with a thrust of the remote. We’re told shouting “Yargggh” does not help, but such Pirate colloquialisms will make you feel that much cooler. Also: the Z-button is your friend. Unlike At World’s End on the 360/PS3, you’re given a block button which deflects attacks, but only for a short period of time. Get used to it though, ‘cause At World’s End on the Wii consistently throws bad guys at you, giving it more of an arcadey feel.

Another difference in the Wii version is the inventory system. Instead of using items like grenades as soon as you find them, you’ll automatically store them for when things get really hairy. Among others, you’ll find chicken for health in a throwback to arcade brawlers and ammo. Finally we were able to live out our Raiders of the Lost Ark fantasy where we were tired of fighting and just shot our adversaries. Take that, Redcoats.

Other features such as LEGO Star Wars-style character unlockables for repeated play-throughs and Jackanisms  - Resident Evil 4 and God of War -style context-sensitive situations (which are bastard-hard) - round out this treasure trove. We’ll have a complete review around the game’s release on May 22. In the meantime, hit the Images tab for new screenshots.
