NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams

Old interview may hold key to NiGHTS control

How the Wii-mote could realize a dream

So NiGHTS is coming to Wii. It's massive news for anyone familiar with the beautiful 1996 original and something you should definitely be aware of even if you've never played it. And if you listen, you'll hear everyone saying "The Wii-mote would be perfect for it." But wait a second... is it really?

The press release states "With the innovative Wii Remote, gamers will experience a heightened sense of gliding, spiraling, and looping through seven mystical dream worlds packed with high-flying adventure." We remember using the Sega Saturn's 3D controller's shoulder buttons to execute twists and pirouettes in the air. But how will we do that with the Wii-mote?

Above: Sega Superstars on PS2. If control is like this in the new NiGHTS game, you'll either be really strong or really playing something else very quickly

Let's assume you're not going to use the Wii-mote to fly with your arms out like in the fun-but-physically-painful NiGHTS section in the PS2 EyeToy game Sega Superstars. The nunchuk lead isn't long enough to let you do this properly with one set and Sega surely wouldn't expect you to buy a second Wii-mote for your other hand.

Using the Wii-mote as a pointer would be fine in the traditional side-on view, where you'd use it as a donkey and carrot-style cursor device for NiGHTS to fly towards, but it wouldn't really give much more of a sense of interaction. Alternatively, the game may be viewed from behind NiGHTS, in which case an Excite Truck-style horizontal controller position would work. We quite like the idea of flying with NiGHTS through the 3D world in this less arm-tiring manner, but a solely into-the-screen view would be a break from tradition, despite being present as brief sections in the original game.
