NBA Live 08

Soaring to the rafters while keeping your knees intact

Instead of buttons pressed with a certain timing, jump shots are executed by mimicking an up-down motion with the remote. Dunks, on the other hand, require a side-to-side waggle so long as your potential slammer is in the right position. Measured flicking also handles free throws, defense and rebounding.

We'll give credit where it's due; it begins to feel perfectly normal to control your cagers with a wave and jiggle pretty quickly. Unfortunately, the mechanics aren't exactly what we'd call tight, as sometimes you'll swear you did the dunk command only to see nothing happen, or timed a foul shot just right even as a brick clanks unceremoniously off the rim.

The Wii-specific Live Party mode offers some amusing minigame diversions. Even better, these slam dunk contests and three-point competitions don't require a second controller. Online play also makes an appearance, which is a nice addition indeed. Unfortunately, there's no franchise available, so any dreams of piloting a team on a run at a few titles is out the door. Otherwise, you're left with a virtual port of the PS2 title, visuals and all. Trust us, it's not exactly a graphical masterpiece.
