Metroid Prime Trilogy

With a deal like this, there’s no excuse for ignoring gaming’s sexiest bounty hunter

Words: Brett Elston, GamesRadar US

For a brief period, we considered giving Metroid Prime Trilogy a 10. The original Prime, released in 2002, was a near-perfect blend of sci-fi shooting and thoughtful exploration. The version on this disc has been immensely enhanced with spot-on motion controls that make the previously stiff aiming a breeze. Right away that’s worth buying… and then Nintendo crams Prime 2 and Prime 3 on the same disc, all with exceptional motion controls. Essentially they’ve made a series of outstanding games, one of which was nearly a 10/10 in the first place, even better than before.

Above: Metroid Prime Trilogy score: 279/10

Knowing this, it goes without saying this compilation kicks every other Wii FPS square in the nuts, and we’re flat-out telling you to buy it. But for the sake of elucidation, we’ll explain precisely why Prime Trilogy has us so excited.

They’re shooters with substance

When Metroid Prime first released, everyone felt they had to call it a first-person shooter because, well, it was first person, and you had an arm cannon, so what else could it be? The term “first-person adventure” was thrown around a lot, but today we can summarize the experience by saying “it’s a little like BioShock.”

Above: Yes, it is

Oh, you kill things with lasers, but there’s so much more to the game than pulling a trigger. The whole planet is your playground, from rain swept caves to superheated underground tunnels to submerged spacecraft, each with slight touches that make it feel distinct. Insects scurry between rocks with no purpose other than to make Tallon IV seem like a real, functioning biosphere. Water, heat and bright flashes all dance across your visor, occasionally offering a glimpse of space-heroine Samus Aran, reaffirming that you’re playing as a definite person, not a walking suit of armor.

Above: Bright blasts make Samus wince and blink

Above: Raindrops subtly smear your view…

Above: …while intense heat clouds the visor with steam

It’s not just the atmosphere that makes the journey so memorable – it’s also the sense of personal progression. Each game begins with Samus (predictably) losing her vast array of beams, missiles, grappling hooks and specialty visors, and by exploring every last inch of the planet you build her back up to her usual ass-kicking self. By the end you feel like a one-woman army, capable of ripping through any rock monster, poison-spewing moth or shadowy doppelganger the planet could possibly throw at you. In short, you’re not the same fighter you were at the start, much like the Plasmids and upgradable weapons in BioShock drastically change the way you tackle enemies in the back half of the game.

If you’re one of those people obsessed with backstory, all three Prime games lay it on thick with mission logs, translated artifacts and detailed files on every enemy, item and weapon in the game. Granted, a lot of it’s superfluous and occasionally boring, but it does flesh everything out for those who want to read up on the universe.

Above: Fascinating!

This is a crazy-good deal!

As we mentioned in the intro, the first game is substantial enough to warrant its own re-release. Adding Prime 2 to the mix, plus Wii’s Prime 3, all for the price of a regular game, approaches Orange Box levels of value. And while packaging never affects the actual score of a game, it’s nice to see Trilogy shipping in a fancy metal case and slipcover, when barely any other Wii games are worth the effort.

Above: Hard case, fold-out art book with timeline and slip cover

Fun fact about that metal case: it’s a Steelbook, the same that usually adds $10 to the price of various Xbox special edition discs. Maybe that’s what keeps this from being another $30 New Play Control game, we’re not sure. All we see is a slick box loaded with three of Nintendo’s best products for the price of one.

Nice review.

This is nice, but I'm still waiting for a SNES style, 2D, HD Metroid. Fuck, just remake Super Metroid, and I'll buy six copies out of solidarity alone.

Great review.

I'll be picking this one up even though I have beaten all three already.

This will keep my wii busy for a LONG time. I played Prime 2, but I didn't get very far. Question, though. Where did the stupid Phazon come from? And I heard there's a collectors edition, but that's the ONLY cover I see for the game. So is the collectors edition the only edition?

Might get this. Looks awesome.

I never realized how similar the three games were (Reffering to article's timeline comparison) I've only played the first and started the second, but the Trilogy is an awesome deal. Accurate review.

i think i've seen the second or first mp games for sale at a gamespot or eb games (whichever you prefer to call it, their both the same thing, owned by the same company) and i think it was still at $20 to $60, i also saw it at a superstore for, look above. i bet my game store will jack up the price just like the psp packages for $200 compared to $150 and the legend of zelda collector's eddition that came with the gamecube on their shelf for $60 dollars when it is free with the system.

i'm glad i don't have any of these 3 games, so it will be a good value. if you already have the gamecube version(s) and or the wii version, (especially the wii version) you might as well pass on this (unless you are a diehard fan of the series) since it's not worth having 2 of the same games and their trade in isn't worth it. they tried to give me a buck for a $10 game and for psp headset with the controller. i recommend not trading in if the game is worth $10 dollars. $8 dollar minimum for their "sweet" and all that is worth that much is super smash bros melee, brawl, mario kart wii. you see what i'm saying, they need to be practically new or expensive to purchase.

Not another Metroid game!!!
how can the Wii get any worse another Mario game
Denrok  - 3 months 22 days ago
Wow. I've never played any of the Prime games and the Wii is the only 7th generation console that I own. I have to get this or I'm an idiot.

this or Punchout!!...

Ahh! I can't decide

I gotta say that the fluid aiming controls would make Prime a bit better. I just had some trouble shooting quickly when I played Prime 3, because I had to hold the aim steady. I don't mind the aiming style in the GC version, and seeing as how I have all 3 already, I'm gonna pass this one up. And I gotta admit that I had next to no incentive to keep going with Prime 2 like you said. And personally, I think it was the worst sequel to any game I've played, for the reasons you said.

Holy crap, this is already out? I need to buy it, I'm already selling Prime 1 and 2.....

I'm not really a "collector" so I feel alienated from this edition.

I'm usually against repackaging old titles like this and re-releasing them with some gimmick to make it "new". In this case, it's the wii waggle controls. But, since there was such a low install base for the GameCube as compared to the Wii, I think this is not only a great steal, but one of the few compilation packs that is a must-buy.

I both love and hate this review. I love it because I agree with all your points, I hate it because it got me intrested in GC stuff again. Had a Wii, sold it, don't regret it; but I still like GC stuff, which I haven't had for a long time. This prompted me to do some research.
For roughly $25 more than what most people are going to paying for Modern Warfare 2 Prestige edition ($150). You can get . . .

Nintendo Gamecube
Controller
Memory Card
The Legend of Zelda Collector's Editing (wihich comes with The Legend of Zelda, Zelda 2, Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time, and The Legend of Zelda Majora’s Mask)
Metroid Prime
Metroid Prime 2
Resident Evil 4
Animal Crossing
Star Fox: Assault
Killer 7
Viewtiful Joe
Donkey Jungle Beat w/ bongos
F-zero GX
and Time Splitters 2.

Again, you can get all this for roughly
$175, so the fact that you can get MP 1,2,and 3 for only $50 is a GREAT DEAL for da Wii peoplz.
Great Review, and I can't wait to get this for a friend so I can play it.
