Metroid dev "taking a break from Samus"

Retro Studios won't be returning to Metroid immediately

Aug 31 2007

Retro Studios, developer of Metroid Prime, Prime 2 and the upcoming Prime 3: Corruption on Wii, will not be leaping straight into another Samus-led project. Mark Pacini, the game's director, has revealed that "[Retro Studios is] taking a break from the Metroid series, and from Samus".

"I'm sure that there will be other titles created," says Pacini, "but as far as Retro Studios is concerned, we're taking a break for a little bit".

Elsewhere in a video interview by Yahoo! Games, Pacini explains how Retro Studios wasn't originally aware of Wii's new technology: "We started with the core ideas of the game ... but we did not recieve the information about the Wii controller until well into development".

"So we got a big surprise, of, hey, this is what we're going to do for the next console. Many things had to be refactored, but actually many things fell right into place. The Wii remote enables us to do things that we hadn't previously done in other Metroid games."

So, now Retro has a handle on Wii's fresh approach, where next for the developer? Here's hoping we'll see Retro Studios working on a brand new game, and putting their Wii experience towards pushing the console's potential even further.
