Mario Party 8

Mario Party 8

Bring your own cake; Mario will take care of the gold coins and bitter tears

One minigame has all four players taking part in simultaneous baseball batting, which sounds like a recipe for black eyes and tears. It's simpler than the Wii Sports version and doesn’t require you to take full swings, but still… it’ll be interesting to see what safety measures they include and how far they dare push the frantic four-way activity features.

One of the minigames with less potential for injury sees you and your friends scrubbing filth off a Chain Chomp, which should have you yearning for a Wii version of Nintendogs. Another involves shaking the remote to make a bottle of lemonade explode with the highest stream of fizz when you open it.

Other games force players to team up, either two on two or three against one, so there’s hope for those of us who aren’t too hot at the individual games. Unless you’re the one who has to fight everyone else.

There are also some special duel games, which are triggered when two players land on a certain space on the board. A quick battle ensues and the winner walks away with a soul-crushing amount of precious coins.

Hopefully Mario Party 8 is the reason the multiplayer mode was skimpy in Wario Ware Smooth Moves - because they were saving it for something special. We’ll find out in May.
