From its inception, Platinum Games declared its games were being engineered with worldwide appeal. MadWorld struggled to find an audience earlier this year for reasons Sega hasn't yet figured out, according to recently appointed Sega president and COO Mike Hayes.

But Hayes doesn't believe Platinum Games' next release, the hyperkinetic Bayonetta from Devil May Cry creator Hideki Kamiya, will face the problems at release.

"I think there are clearly development differences between the two," said Hayes in a phone interview with me earlier this week. "On MadWorld itself, we're researching it as we speak to try and identify some of the causes behind that. I think Bayonetta comes from a background and a genre that's been already proven to be popular. I think with MadWorld we were trying to be so many different things probably all at once that maybe we pushed the envelope a bit too far."

"I personally have no fear (about sales of Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles), Resident Evil is a massive brand on a worldwide scale and you can't really compare it to MadWorld," he said. 'Personally I do like MadWorld, I think it is a very unique game. I think we should be happy to be able to play a game like this. It's kind of disappointing that it didn't sell.'"

There has been a great deal of speculation about the underwhelming retail performance of PlatinumGames' MadWorld, but now OTX research group GamePlan Insights has released detailed data illustrating the often-thin correlation between online acclaim and real-world retail success, particularly on the Wii platform.

As demonstrated by GamePlan's Nick Williams at the Los Angeles Game Conference, with slides made available to Gamasutra, the game's strong awareness among the hardcore online gaming community bore little relationship with its weak awareness among the wider gaming public.

For example, from January to March, the tracking metrics used by major consumer gaming site IGN.com pegged the bloody brawler as the Wii game with the highest level of unique interest, and by extension purchase intent.

The introduction of two of the firms new games, MADWORLD and Sports Island 2 ended up as regular failures in the U.S. and Japanese markets..."

"Sports Island 2 sold 2,500 copies on the first day
By comparison, the first game fared significantly better in its debut in Japan. Here were sold 30,000 copies the first day..."

"The news about the two game launches will follow in the wake of statements made by Nintendo itself, which describes the Wii's current market as problematic.

It’s rare to see a game that’s genuinely funny (on purpose, at least), and most of the games that try range from passably entertaining to insultingly awful. Chalk it up to games and humor being subjective art forms, one man’s culture being another man’s trash, et cetera. ...

This week it seems many outlets have saw fit to slash the price below the £20 mark. The price cut comes less than two weeks after the games launch, when the game was selling for around £29.99 - although the RRP was £34.99."
SEGA of America inc, yesterday announced that MADWORLD, the black and white third-person action game developed exclusively for Nintendo's Wii system, shipped to retailers across North America.

"Some would argue that the Gamefly 'most queued' should be taken with a grain of salt. Generally, it is apparent that the Xbox 360 is the most common rental platform that absolutely skews the results. In addition, one could argue that a title that appears near the top of the list is there because it is worth a rental versus a purchase. With that being said, it is still a decent gauge on the level of interest for a particular game.

For the week of March 10, 2009, Halo Wars once again takes the top spot on the cross-platform Gamefly Top Ten 'Most Queued' list. Following close behind is Resident Evil 5 (PS3, Xbox 360). MadWorld is at the top of the Nintendo Wii Queue as well...
"When comparing the big three consoles, the Nintendo Wii takes the crown for the quantity of releases for the month of March. Lets be frank though... quality vs. quality has always been a bit of a challenge for the Wii. With that being said, we are starting to see the results of developers/publishers re-focused efforts due to the success of the Wii platform.

Highlights for the month of March 2009 include the MadWorld, Sonic and the Black Knight, MySims Party, Rune Factory: Frontier, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time, and Guitar Hero Metallica.

You can see the device, with its telltale extra height, sitting to the right of the designer's monitor at the beginning of the video below. Why would the lead animation designer for Madworld Wii need an Xbox 360 development kit so close to his workstation, unless…"

Kotaku: Upcoming black, white and red Wii title MadWorld is a unique looking game. It runs, however, in 480i and not the more HD-kosher 480p.

Surprised? IGN's Matt Casamassina noticed the game was running in 480i while capturing MadWorld videos. "Usually, lack of 480p support can be credited to developer laziness," writes Casamassina. "No way such a claim can be leveled at Platinum Games or MadWorld... I'm wondering, then, if the studio simply wasn't aware that 480p is 'kind of a big deal' for a chunk of Wii owners."
House of the Dead: Overkill splatters onto screens this week, and later next month Sega’s following that up with a brass-knuckled punch from the post-apocalyptic bloodbath, MadWorld. We got to play through the first three levels of our most anticipated Wii game of 2009 and we just had to show you the outright nastiness that’s in store. Perhaps the only other obstacle standing in the overall success of MadWorld is the game's sales. However, granted there is enough interest in the game and it is successful, it looks as though a sequel may be possible.

Joystiq: "A Sega America representative has confirmed that MadWorld is ready to begin its reign of bloody action on March 10th on the Wii in North America. Oddly enough, the title still does not have an anticipated M-rating from the ESRB, despite having already passed both Austrailian and British rating boards.

Publisher Sega has been working with the review boards to eliminate possible delays to MadWorld's release -- now that the publisher has picked an official release date, it might be good if the ESRB gave an "all clear.""
It's already common knowledge that everyone wants a Wii. Grandparents, small children, famous celebrities, everyone wants a piece of the Wii. With games like Wii sports and Mario Kart Wii, who wouldn't want one? With all these "fun for everyone" games out and about, where does it leave all of us hardcore gamers?...

Nintendo, with SEGA, has decided to release a few more M (Mature) rated games and give the hardcore gamers what they want, blood guts, gore, and some humor on the side..."

The original reports came from a rating of the game by the Australian Classification Board, which gave MadWorld a Mature 15+ rating while also noting that the title is 'Multi Platform'."
But what many people didn't notice from that report is that the Classification Board clearly lists MadWorld as a...
Madworld has been rated by the Australian Classification board and been given the big red MA15+, and not only that, it's coming completely unedited. It was known that SEGA Australia were fighting hard for the game and it seems to have paid off. The Classification Board has said the game has "Strong bloody violence, Strong coarse language" which we are glad to see. The game is set for a March release.

Mike Hayes, COO and president of Sega Europe, acknowledged that casual games are "mostly where we have secured success" in recent times, but told Edge that 2009 will likely be a year in which core-focused titles perform strongly too.

Edge Online Write: Capcom's upcoming MadWorld has been granted an 18 certificate by the British Board of Film Classification, ending concerns that it would struggle to be granted full certification.

"From our testing of the product, there was clearly no reason for us to intervene at the adult level," a spokesperson for the BBFC told Edge.

Some UK tabloid newspapers have already given the game's content their own assessment, with one explaining it has – already – horrified parents due to being "the most violent videogame ever." As well as question whether that particular tabloid had access to the game, the BBFC spokesperson clarified the issue surrounding MadWorld's controversial content; "We clearly had no problems with MadWorld. If we had, we wouldn't have classified it; it's as simple as that."

""MadWorld" is one of the most anticipated third-party Wii games and perhaps the most violent. Though sporting a black-and-white aesthetic, there's plenty of blood.

At the first day of Nintendo's fall summit in San Francisco, a pair of Sega representatives showed me an updated build of "Mad World" and described how they're handling the game's violent nature."
This new brand goes by the name of 'Shake it Up Baby', and will allow less seasoned gamers to jump right in to the most complicated of games.

Platinum Games chose Wii as the platform for its ultra-violent, black and white blood bath, MadWorld, because "it feels like a game that is at home" on Nintendo's console. Hmmm.

Speaking to CVG Platinum Games' Atsushi Inaba said the pick up and play nature of the controversial action game made it a good fit for Wii.

"We're really interested in the Wii platform so we wanted to create a really cool and stylish game for that," said Inaba.

via Eurogamer:

"SEGA Wii game MadWorld will "spoil the family fun image" of the console, according to Mediawatch-UK, a British organisation that campaigns for decency in television, games and films.

"I hope the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) will view this with concern and decide it should not be granted a classification," John Beyer, director of Mediawatch-UK, told the Mail Online.

"What the rest of world does is up to them. We need to ensure that modern and civilised values take priority rather than killing and maiming people.

"It seems a shame that the game's manufacturer have decided to exclusively release this game on the Wii," said Beyer. "I believe it will spoil the family fun image of the Wii.""

Director of upcoming gore-fest from SEGA and Platinum games details why such a game is a good fit for Wii.

At SEGA's showcase event for its four-game deal with Platinum Games (the studio formerly known as Seeds, created by ex-Clover Studio staff) Mad World director Shigenori Nishikawa revealed why the decision was made to develop such a violent game for Nintendo's family-oriented console.

"We felt that the Wii Marketplace had too many of the same type of games - there was something missing in the line-up," stated Nishikawa. "That's why we created such a game as Mad World."

Publisher Sega just delivered the first scant details on MadWorld, Infinite Line, an unnamed game, and Bayonetta, the first four projects from new developer Platinum Games Inc. And yes, new games are announced almost every day, but this is special. Why? Because Platinum Games is made up of the men who invented cutting-edge classics like Resident Evil, Okami, Viewtiful Joe, Devil May Cry, and the mech-tacular Steel Battalion. Simply ...
