Guitar Hero World Tour

It's got drums and vocals now – can it out play Rock Band 2?

It looks like competing “tap the buttons as colored gems move across the screen in time with music” games Rock Band and Guitar Hero have started the kind of annual rivalry usually reserved for sports fans. So, despite the fact that the series is still called Guitar Hero, this year’s big innovation is the addition of drummers and singers (and the accompanying $180 bundle pack). It’s tempting to deride the series for copying Rock Band 2, but it’s really just a natural evolution of this genre. Besides, Guitar Hero: World Tour actually trumps RB2 in a few key areas.

The most important difference is obvious after only one song: though you can use your Rock Band 2 gear with no problems, Guitar Hero World Tour has better instruments. The drum kit’s cymbals feel better and the pads sound deeper and feel more substantial. Rock Band 2’s drums have a better kick pedal, but even with its added outboard cymbals, that’s the only advantage it can claim over these beauties.

The guitar is a closer call – it lacks the visual beauty and “pickup selector” sound effects switch of Rock Band 2’s guitar. Plus, the “string” flipper is oddly, at times infuriatingly squeaky. However, the beefier star power button finally has the perfect size and location: at the bridge, where you’re unlikely to hit it by accident but where you can easily punch with your hand without interrupting your stroke. And the addition of a flat, touch-sensitive pad higher up the neck, which enables new in-game moves like faster tapping and slide guitar, seals the deal.

Once you start playing, you’ll find a bare-bones solo career mode. You’re basically a gigger-for-hire answering ads on a bulletin board, which leads to a vast list of celebrity cameos from Sting and Ozzy to Jimi Hendrix and Hayley from Paramore. We appreciated the wide range of difficulty options, though.

Multiplayer modes are pretty robust, with full support for four musicians not only offline, but online – even in full, four-on-four, head-to-head band battles, which Rock Band 2 doesn’t even do.

I that this game is a complete waste of money. I didn't like it. The instruments are good, but the intruments break down to easily. Rock Band outclasses Guitar Hero yet agian. The charactor customization was neat until I realized that, no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't make any charactor look like anything better than "ugly as sin." All the default charctors and celebrities ended up just as ugly, with the except of Paramore's Hayley Williams. The abominations I made in GHWT are nothing compaired to the Gods of Rock and Valkyries of Metal that I made in RB2. The polish and presentation fail in the presence of RB2. DLC is pretty barren so far... The music studio is a very interesting touch, even if it is too complicated.
And finally the setlist... The setlist in Rock Band 2 is one of the best ever with great songs, great bands, new DLC every week, and almost all of RB1's songs. GHWT had some good songs, some great songs, but far too many terrible songs. At least 20 of the songs on the setlist are also in RB2, and many of them are some of the only good songs in the game. Although, 3 Tool songs is pretty awesome, it can't make up for the songs that make me want to vomit (I'm looking at you Beastie Boys, Motorhead, Survivor, and Steely Dan) And finally, where is the impossible song on par wiht Through the Fire and Flames?

Ignore Guitar Hero, get Rock Band.

yeah I'm sorry but i got just the game, and I got screwed, this game is all a load of crap punk songs, now don't get me wrong, punk is awesome, if done right (sex pistols, adam and the ants) but i bought GHWT expecting awesome, rock 'n' roll, AC/DC, guns 'n' roses, velvet revolver, queen, you get the gist, and i got a barrel of shit, with a couple of gems mixed in, now those gems are great, but mixed in with the shit they're clouded over and it's difficult to see the good side of the barrel, and after long you give up searching for the gems, because you don't have the patience to sift through the shit to find those gems, because that's how bad it is. oh and the gameplay sucks, the notes don't look as good as on GH:III and it all feels very sterile, I don't even have RB2 and i recommend it over this.
