Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock

Also known as: Guitar Hero 3, GH3

Call of Duty: Black Ops may hold the crown for bestselling videogame in US history, but a more recent study by retail analyst firm NPD has pegged Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock as the highest grossing US title of all time. What's the difference? Cash money, yo. But like any study that claims to rank the best of anything, this particular report comes with a crap ton of caveats.

Gamasutra: Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock has brought in more money in new U.S. retail sales than any game in recent history, according to new data released by the NPD group.

Guns 'N Roses frontman Axl Rose filed a lawsuit against Activision Blizzard today claiming the company violated a deal by using imagery of guitarist Saul Hudson (aka Slash) while also including the band's hit song Welcome to the Jungle in Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock.

Sleep usually helps humans do anything better, which is exactly what a recent study proved when linked to playing Guitar Hero 3. Gamers were tested on their responsiveness to the music videogame with different sleep patterns, and confirmed just how much sleep itself can really affect your game.

According to sources at both Activision and Neversoft, the next 'Guitar Hero' will be the last one Neversoft does before the franchise is handed over to Vicarious Visions. Vicarious Visions has been the studio who has ported all the prior 'Guitar Hero' games to the Wii.

GameSpot writes: Wii Remote pack-in leads list of all-time titles; Guitar Hero III, GTA: San Andreas, Modern Warfare 2, Wii Fit, Mario Kart Wii, Call of Duty 4, Madden NFL 07, COD: World at War, and Namco Museum also make chart. Last week when NPD released its December 2009 US sales numbers, it declared that three of the 10 games of all time were from the Call of Duty franchise. Today, the industry-research firm released its list of top 10 domestic non-PC games to date, which reconfirmed that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 was the fourth best seller of all time. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare came in seventh place, followed by Call of Duty: World at War in ninth. Don't call it a comeback--it's been here for years. Unfortunately, NPD's number-one best-selling software game is a game many people don't consider a game at all. The Wii Remote pack-in minigames compilation Wii Play is now the top-selling software game product of all time in the United States, beating out Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock (second) and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (third).

Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine answered a fan's question whether they were planning to make a Guitar Hero game. Here's his comments on the matter.

BeefJack writes: You know what we haven't had in a while? Renowned artists slamming Rhythm Gaming based on their fear of new things! In an interview with The Independent, Jimmy Page formerly of Led Zeppelin made another one of his legendary quips against the longstanding Guitar Hero franchise- also, to further the disappointment of fans, has once again shunned the possibility of a Led Zeppelin tie-in.

From Gamertell: Named the You Rock Guitar, this is an honest-to-goodness string guitar (OK, a digital string guitar) that plugs into your computer. For $20 more you can get a GameFlex cartridge that adapts the guitar to be used as a controller for consoles games including Guitar Hero and Rock Band. The You Rock Guitar will be available in February 2010 for $179.95 but will be on display during CES 2010 at Booth 5627 Gaming Showcase, LVCC, North Hall Las Vegas Hilton East Tower Hospitality Suite H2549.
