Guilty Gear XX Accent Core

A fighting classic, tweaked to be even better

In the end, there are only two real problems with Accent Core. One is its control scheme - the Wii-mote/nunchuk controls are awful: they're infuriatingly imprecise, but the dev team has compensated by adding in "hold a button and swing" auto-pilot hotkeys that make super-tough moves so easy that it completely breaks the gameplay. Use a GameCube or classic controller - which both work, though the GC controller has a funny button layout - or knock at least two points off this score. It makes that big a difference.

The second problem is its lack of originality. This is distressingly similar to past Guilty Gear offerings - hence the 8 instead of a 9 - but it's still a fantastic fighting game with one of the deepest fighting systems ever seen and a cast of unique-but-balanced characters that will have you playing until your thumbs bleed. Good stuff.

You'll love
  • The rocking soundtrack
  • The amazingly diverse characters
  • Oh-so-satisfying one hit kills
You'll hate
  • Horrid remote/nunchuk controls
  • The complexity of the system
  • The grueling boss battles
