Grand Slam Tennis

The best Wii tennis game. And yes, we are serious

You can tell the difference immediately. You open up the invisible face of your ‘racquet’ to drive an imaginary forehand down the line, and that’s exactly where the on-screen ball goes. Put a bit more angle on the swing, aiming for the opposite corner, and the ball goes that way, too. Impressive!

After a couple of years of growing accustomed to the timing-based way of doing things, as seen in every single tennis game since Wii Sports, it’s quite remarkable. It took a while to lose the bad old habit of just flicking the remote nonchalantly from the wrist, but by the time we felt comfortable enough to really let rip, we probably had an 80% success rate putting the ball where we wanted it. Finally, the Wii remote works like we always wanted it to in a tennis game.

Of course this is all dependent on using the MotionPlus add-on, which is bundled with the premium version of Grand Slam Tennis. Without that insubstantial widget plugged into the bottom of the remote, it plays much like any other Wii tennis game, with the direction of the shots based entirely on how early or late you took a swing. You can switch between control methods on the fly, by plugging in combinations of MotionPlus and a Nunchuk during play. The game recognises what you’ve got and adjusts accordingly, with the appropriate degree of AI assistance.

The Nunchukless MotionPlus set-up is the most satisfying to use, but it means you have to pay close attention to the orientation of your player. If you swing a forehand when the ball is on the backhand side, your player will swipe at thin air and commentator Pat Cash will call you an arsewipe.

That won’t happen so much if you add a Nunchuk, as you’ll be able to run around the ball to hit it on your strongest side. Unfortunately you’ll also run the risk of whipping yourself in the face with the cord or pulling the plug out of the bottom of the remote if you swing too wildly, but at least the game won’t freeze and ask you to reconnect it when that happens.

All well and good, but when are we going to see the Virtua Tennis review? Friday is fast approaching and I need to know which of these to buy.

I got this on saturday and just wanted to confirm that it IS online and that it is brilliant. I used to play club tennis and this feels just like playing the real game, without hitting the ball into the net or out quite as much. You will never play Wii sports tennis again.

Just read the 1up review of this. They were not as impressed by the motion plus as you, although honestly I trust Gamesradar a lot more than 1up as far as reviews go. If this game comes even close to being like Super Tennis, then I might have to grab it. God that game was fun!

I've got 4-5 tennis games on the Wii, and including this one I'm yet to be impressed. Let's face it, the Wii is just a poorly designed machine for tennis games, in fact most games. I haven't found anything with the ease of movement & hitting as Topspin on Xbox. Even with the MotionPlus countless times the player just doesn't move for the ball & you're stuck swinging at thin air before frustration sets in. Using the Nunchuk is the most awkward game experience I've used, so really this game is a complete waste of money. The serve is a useless shot on this game with no power at all, I wonder how many weeks one has to play to get more speed on it?? Most shots come off with topspin even if you make a flat or slice spin to it. If it wasn't for the Wii Fit & perhaps Bully, I'd have sold my Wii & the dozen games I've got long ago. I'm still planning to do that soon. It will make a good deposit on a Xbox 360 or Playstation 3... something decent to play tennis games on.

Anyone wanting this game is recommended to hire it first so you'll see it's not worth purchasing.

I'm sorry @Fantome, did you just say Wii Fit???
As I quote "If it wasn't for the Wii Fit & perhaps Bully, I'd have sold my Wii & the dozen games I've got long ago."
Wii fit is for soccer moms and grandparents. Casual gamers. Not hardcore gamers.
Also, I believe you are a bit of a fanboy as you plan to sell your Wii just as a flood of good games come. The conduit is here, Metroid the other M, all of that stuff. Note, Grand slam and virtua tennis are not terrible.
I rest my case.

fun game better than all my other wii games only problem is it's nothing like actually playing tennis in real life harder to hit the ball flat and way to easy to slice the ball also i cant figure out how to hit different types of serves
