Square Enix honcho Yoichi Wada (above, left) is worried. Western game companies are doing really well! Meaning that competition is getting harder. Yet, Wada hopes to capitalise on the Western market, aiming to increase the ratio of overseas sales from its current 50 percent to 80 percent in the next three years. According to the exec:

"We face competition not only from Japanese videogame companies but from game companies worldwide. We also see some new players from outside the videogame industry coming in... Economies of scale and breadth of scope is getting important. It may be a business alliance or it may be us taking a stake in others, but we need to go beyond traditional Square Enix."

That business alliance sounds nice and all. But, how about stop calling everything Final Fantasy? Or make things other than RPGs? Or if you are going to make RPGs, why not make the games people have been asking for for the past decade?

Here's his exact quote:

"Development for both Ring of Fates and THE CRYSTAL BEARERS are proceeding smoothly!!"

Wii - Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Crystal Bearers - GDC08: Square Enix no-comments FFCC Crystal Bearers Joystiq reports that following the presentation about Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King, an attendee asked the speakers, producer Toshiro Tsuchida and lead programmer Fumiaki Shiraishi, the question that most Wii Final Fantasy fans have had on their minds: does the new Wii Ware project mean the end of the retail Crystal Chronicles game, The Crystal Bearers?

The Square Enix staffers demurred in response to this question, saying only that we should "wait for a press release" to tell us about that situation. Does that mean that The Crystal Bearers is definitely canceled for real? No, just that those two developers wisely didn't want to reveal Square Enix's internal plans. Still, it's not terribly encouraging, given rumors of its shaky status

Wii - Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Crystal Bearers - Crystal Chronicles Pricing Set Following today's announcement of Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles for Nintendo's Wii Ware download service, Square Enix has opened up an official webpage for the game, fully titled Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Chiisa na Ousama to Yakusoku no Kuni (Little King and the Promised Country).

Also revealed at the page is release information for the game. Crystal Chronicles will be available for download at a cost of 1,500 Wii Points. It will be available, in Japan, simultaneously with the start of the Wii Ware service, which is expected in March 2008.
