World of Nintendo

From the well-made to the wtf - we bring you the odds and ends of Nintendo

Words: Martin Kitts, NGamer UK

6) Cart boxes are back
How have we managed to survive without a set of these? They’re called DS Card Blocks, and they come in packs of six for a few bucks. Once your DS carts are stored snugly inside, you can clip them together to make interesting shapes and artistic sculptures. Wonder how many it’ll take to make a Mario sprite? We could definitely use a regular supply of these.

7) Super Tesla Bros.
Sparkly electrical magic is what makes our consoles do anything other than sit by the TV looking plasticky. We’d have no fun at all without it, and to celebrate the crackling wonder of high-voltage circuitry, two engineers from Illinois designed the Zeusaphone - two Tesla coils (ask a physics person) that do a grand job of playing the theme from Super Mario Bros. using the sweet sound of lightning.

8) Nintendo & the whale
Greenpeace compiled a report on how ‘green’ the console makers are, and Nintendo finished rock bottom with zero points out of ten - possibly because they refused to co-operate. As a rule, if it’s mass-produced, it’s about as green as a suppurating landfill.

9) Feeling a little horse
Wow! We were impressed enough by the light sword on the previous page, but this add-on is even bigger. It’s a rocking horse with a Wii remote taped to its bottom. Bluetooth and all that. Ace!

10) Galaxy soundtrack
Seeing as how some of the best music Nintendo have ever done is in the orchestral arrangements of Super Mario Galaxy, it’s only fitting that the soundtrack should make it onto a CD for listening on those rare occasions when you’re not playing the game. You could stick it on an SD card and use it for background music in Endless Ocean. That would be cool. Pubs could play it to discourage violence. But only in Japan, for now. Noooooo!
