What the hell is Dragon Quest?

Why you should care about this gaming behemoth

Words: GamesRadar US

It's shifted 40 million units worldwide, second only to Final Fantasy in sales - in Japan it even outsells the global RPG giant. In 1988, so many people blew off work and played hooky to line up for Dragon Quest III that a law was promptly introduced banning the release of Dragon Quest titles on a weekday to stop another countrywide bout of sick-leave anarchy.

The games' gobbledygook terminology has entered everyday usage, with the word Hoimi - representing a basic healing spell - officially inducted into Japanese language in 1991. There's no denying that Dragon Quest is massive, defining a genre, creating others, spawning manga, anime, toys - hell, there’s even a ballet of it.
