What now-gen games can learn from Radiant Silvergun

The legacy of one of the best games ever made, ten years on - and why it's still worth £100

Words: Justin Towell, GamesRadar UK

3D graphics, 2D gameplay
The game may be incredibly difficult, but survival is only possible because the game is essentially 2D. If the player were to be given complete control of the craft within 3D space, the 'one hit kill' mechanic would become impossible to overcome. Modern joypads and 2D TV sets simply can't give precise enough control to allow for a 3D game to be this intense. But that doesn't mean the game doesn't use 3D to its advantage. The game taps both Saturn's processors (one for 2D and one for the 3D enemies and backgrounds), creating a game that looks 3D but actually isn't.

If more developers were to embrace 2D for their gameplay mechanics, we'd get tighter games in general. Too many 3D games are woolly compared to similar 2D titles. Check out the final boss here - the 3D processor gets a thorough workout, but the game is still played in 2D. Brilliant.

Above: It took us about 50 credits to beat the game, starting from default weapon levels. At £1 a play, two playthroughs might cover the eBay price. Just.
