Top 20 Galactic Moments

Super Mario Galaxy is not the first time a Nintendo character has breached the ozone layer

Soon (today, in fact) you’ll be launching from planetoid to planetoid in the blissful, near-perfect space romp known as Super Mario Galaxy. In honor of Mario’s historic extra-terrestrial jaunt, we’ve compiled 20 instances of Nintendo characters that made it into the great black void before Mario did (including Mario himself).

1) Luigi’s Mansion
Our teeth-chattering ‘hero’ comes across a telescope in the observatory, from which he can spot a moon. (Presumably not THE Moon, as THE Moon makes subsequent appearances in the Marioverse.) Just doing this will remove half of the observatory’s roofing, allowing Luigi to - you guessed it! - suck up meteors and aim them at the moon. One celestial collision later, and the moon dust rather conveniently forms a pathway to a Mario star.

2) Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan 2
Our original triumvirate of cheerleaders is used to being placed in far-out situations - in the original, for example, they traveled back in time to help out a beleaguered Cleopatra. However, their cocky rivals couldn’t have anticipated that their feud would lead them into outer space - where they encounter an intergalactic shoe salesman. Show him that you can maintain rhythm in zero-g and our salesman will be inspired to craft you some enormo-soles fit for a race of giants.
