These Screenshots Are Fake!

Warning: Do not believe your eyes. Not even a little bit

Words: Ben Richardson, GamesRadar UK

We know two things for certain. One, that geeks/attention-seekers/psychos will misspend hours of their lives creating fake screenshots in an attempt to fool the internet and so give their otherwise pitiable lives purpose and meaning. And two, that we'll know these botched-up images are fake the second we see them.

Example A: Last week's ridiculous Shadow of the Colossus 2 screenshot. It reeked more of fabricated sham than the heartfelt sentiment spouted at a celebrity-packed awards ceremony. And, predictably, despite it looking less authentic than a market-stall knock-off, the interwebs went mad over the shot, gifting its creator with the attention they so obviously crave.

Which is why we thought we'd gather together a bundle more of these gloriously false images, and wait for the rabid interest to come rolling effortlessly in our direction. No, no, don't thank us. We're just doing our job.

Grand Theft Auto IV

Classic fakery, this one. GTA's instantly recognisable HUD overlay turns any scene into a mid-game action snapshot, especially when combined with a) cars, b) pedestrians and c) a pointy ball on a stick.

SimCity 5

Rule one of fake screenshots: If it looks too good to be true, then it definitely is. Even when the name of the game and the word 'screenshot' happens to be written across it in drab black text. Especially then.

Half-Life 3

This looks great. The pock-marks on the crowbar are excellent. But you know its a fake because staring at it closely gives you that creepy-crawly feeling across your shoulder blades. And anyway, this crowbar is blue. Everyone knows Gordon prefers red.

One reason for doing some of these, is to learn how to use Photoshop, or whatever graphics package you're using. (There's something other than Photoshop?) It's the posting them as 1) original art or, in this case 2) as authentic screen shots that's the sad thing. My daughter is learning photoshop. What better way to learn texture blending and lighting angles.

DS Halo? FYI, people who think the DS is a "serious" console, no.
Well you might just fit Master Chief's head in.....

LOL@ Halo 3...Again. I could almost make out the G-Man in the background.

Most of them were stupid, but Super Mario Galaxy DS...that was believable. I kinda wish it was real.

By the way, with all the of the Killzone screens, it reminds me of the actual story. I haven't played the first (didn't have a PS2), but from what I gather it wasn't a great success, and the hype for the new one is shaky at best.

I have been looking through the story and the history of Killzone of the official website, and I gotta say, it is fucking mindblowing. It's great not because of it's originiality (space marines and colonialization, etc), but that the future they've painted with the story is so believable (the only problem with it is the timeline; within 200 years the human race has completely evolved into the Helghast, not probable). If they incorporate the story at least into the manual or make a history book based on it, I'd buy that shit.

Speaking of, why the hell don't video game companies market the shit out of games with history books (not fan fiction shit)? I'm sure that the Halo series (an easy target) would sell even more copies (if that's even possible) if, before 3 came out, they put out a complete history book for the common crowd to buy and be invested in the story and the universe.
