The Preemptive 2008 Game Awards

Why wait a whole year to give out a pile of, let's face it, mostly meaningless awards?

Words: Tyler Wilde, GamesRadar US

Best RPG

Winner: Fable 2

Molyneux is hyping a lot of interesting concepts with Fable 2, the most prominent being a desire to evoke emotion from players, largely in the form of a companion dog. You know, like Tamagotchis. He’s also introducing a deceptively complex one-button combat system, and, to avoid players having to constantly replay parts of the game, he’s doing away with death and replacing it with brutal beat-downs and everlasting scars.

It’s these innovations that prompted us to preemptively honor Fable 2 as the best RPG of 2008.

Runner up: Lost Odyssey
news | previews | screens | videos

This slightly-more-traditional fantasy/steam punk romp may snag some of Final Fantasy’s fans this year. With the Unreal Engine behind it, Lost Odyssey could be one of the most cinematic RPGs we’ve ever seen.

2nd Runner up: Final Fantasy XIII
news | previews | screens | videos

Why is FFXIII only the second runner up? We know very little about it, and while it’s been scheduled to release sometime this year, who knows if that will actually happen? We’re betting on 2010.
