Punchout!! Trailer
This is everything that’s good about fan films. It drips with affection for the source material, it’s staggeringly well made, it’s clever, and it’s packed with so many old-school Nintendo references that you can watch it five times over and still spot new things to warm your heart on every single viewing. It’s glassy-eyed, grin-faced joy from start to finish, and so well structured that if the build-up to that tune doesn’t give you shivers then you’re probably not actually human. Or you just haven’t played Punchout!! Either way, it amounts to the same thing.
This was an entry to Nintendo’s Short Cuts film competition last year, but bizarrely it didn’t win, losing out to this. In fact it didn’t even make it into final ten. Nice one Nintendo, you heartless, kitten-punching fiends.
