Super Mario Galaxy

E3 09: Mario Galaxy 2 sums up Nintendo's wrongs

How the great hardcore hope could be a terrible omen

Words: David Houghton, GamesRadar UK

What did you think of Nintendo’s E3 press conference then? The usual inane blandathon, drenched in the acrid juices of casual lifestyle aspiration? Thought so. But at least they gave us a look at the new Mario game. One of those can save any year’s line-up, right? Well no. On reflection we don’t think that’s the case any more.

In fact we feel that rather than the glowing beacon of inventive hardcore lovin’ we’ve come to expect, Super Mario Galaxy 2 actually crystalises everything the current Nintendo is doing wrong. It could even be a death knell. Stay with us on this one.

Above: Super Mario Galaxy 2. Or maybe the first one

The reason the core Mario series is so treasured by hardcore Nintendo fans - and trust us, a lifelong devotee is writing these words right now - is the sheer audacious inventiveness of every entry released so far. From Super Mario Bros. to Galaxy, Nintendo completely maintains the deep core of what makes Mario fun while expanding the wider experience each time. It’s incredibly knowing and clever game design.

But now we have Super Mario Galaxy 2, and for once a new Mario game looks like a clone of the one before it. And we’re massively disappointed. It might seem churlish to complain about a game being similar to one of the greatest ever made, but it’s the context and principle that matter here.

Above: No seriously, which one is it?

The core Mario series is the last bastion of the clever, witty, ingenious Nintendo we love, and to see its trademark surprises and reinvention seemingly lacking from a new sequel for first time (no, the re-addition of Yoshi doesn’t count) frankly scares the sh*t out of us.

I'm sitting on the fence here. I do think that announcing 4 different Mario games at E3 is pushing it (What about Kirby? Kid Icarus? Starfox? F-Zero?)

But I still think Nintendo deserves praise for this move. We asked them for more core games, and they're delivering.

I'm hoping that there's more to Mario Galaxy 2 then they're showing us. So far it seems exactly like the first Mario Galaxy (which was great), but there's already one of those; we don't need another. Hopefully there'll be more to it all.

this article is like my voice taken out of my head. I read moment by moment what was happening at the Nintendo conference, read updates, and was just cringing. Dont get me wrong, I have been a long time Nintendo fan, and the announcement of Galaxy 2 got me pumped... but that was basically it. Reading this basically showed me what was missing this year...

You guys hit the nail on the head with this one. I very much hope a turnaround is in the works.

What are you guys babbling about? Did you not hear Miyamoto say it is going to be a HARDER version of Galaxy to please core fans? It is pretty much what Super Mario Bros Lost levels was but tons better. I you look closely the graphics are actually Improved and Yoshi was there. I can't wait for this new entry. It will probably surpass Galaxy in sales and quality!

I don't know. I don't really think that every Mario game has been a whole lot more innovative than those before. The Doki-Doki Panic version of SMB2 that we got in the States was a big change, but that wasn't the original plan, and the Japanese version was essentially a harder version of SMB. Also, SM Sunshine wasn't much different than SM64, other than updated graphics and the stupid paint-washing FLUDD mechanic.

We've been through these and still have decent Mario games, so I think that Nintendo could pull it off. It should be a good game, so long as they don't try to water it down for casual appeal.

I really want this to succeed. I'm a former nintendo fan who really wants to see them back on their A game.

Granted, this will be a good game, but i'm just worried that it won't be what they need to keep from losing their core fans to M$ or Sony.

But then i think "It's friggin' Mario. It will be immensely fun and enjoyable, no matter how THE SAME it is to the previous entry." Ninty might be taking the approach of "It's not broken. Why tinker?" on this one, which can be good and bad.

i just hope this is as good as everyone hopes

i was hoping sooooo much for f-zero,if it doesent come next year, i may consider giving up, i love mario and will buy the game but one genre is not enough to keep me entertained

i was really praying Nintendo would redeem itself this year but they didn't bring much to please their longtime fans. This and that new metriod are all I'm really looking forward to and I'm not looking forward to either of those titles much compared To halo ODST and left 4 dead 2. In truth the only thing that will win me back to Nintendo is some sort of Trailer for PIKMIN FREAKING 3.

This article is pretty much exactly what I was thinking. The charm of the series is in how it keeps reinventing itself. I don't doubt it will be great, but it reeks of Ninty desperately and hastily trying to please whatever core audience it has left.

Recaptcha: feeling stresses. Appropriate for E3 week.

I am not going to sell my Wii but I am definately going to be purchasing a new platform.
With PS3 and 360 having showcased superior Motion Controls and 360 being cheaper than a Wii, Nintendo has lost it's uniquness.
Don't get me wrong, I am still looking forward to many games on the platform, but that Wii Vital Sensor just doesn't excite me enough to stay Nintendo Exclusive.

although i sold a wii to get a 360 mario galaxy and zelda:TP still leave an imprint on me

mario galaxy was awesome in everyway and really doesnt need to be changed...either release a few extra level in a similar way to how DLC for 360 works or change it completely...or better still, leave galaxy alone so we can always enjoy it.

(which i think surpassed all games, even SM64 which is saying something big)

I agree with you. Nintendo usually releases a new Mario once every 5 or so years. This is a new one 2 years after the first Super Mario Galaxy. This one looks exactly the same. I'll still buy this, but I would have preferred something new, like Kid Icarus, of F-Zero.

"The usual inane blandathon, drenched in the acrid juices of casual lifestyle aspiration?"

no actually, thats not what i thought. i knew there was going to be stuff for the casual market, it would be wrong for ninty not to cater for them at this point, but there was more than enough to keep me satisfied.

"But now we have Super Mario Galaxy 2, and for once a new Mario game looks like a clone of the one before it."

miyamoto said it would be 95 to 99% original ideas that just never made it into the first game. like left 4 dead 2, theres so much that could've gone into the first one, but sadly didn't. just because it's in space again doesn't mean it's bad.

really this is the very worst thing about E3, everyone makes assumptions about new games they didn't even know was coming based on a single trailer and a few minutes of a showman talking, but you didn't even listen to the real showman of ninty in e3, miyamoto is where the real deal is at.

There are probably five metric tons of great ideas for SMG that never made it in the game. Leaving these on the cutting room floor would be a shame. When the first was so enjoyable, why not release that content in the form of another game? I don't believe a game has to always offer significant evolution from its predecessor. Either it's fun or it's not. I'm betting SMG2 will score high on the fun factor.

Well, there is so many Mario games for E3. Not that it worries me. But there were some series I wished would show up. Super Smash Bros Ds, Kid Icarus, F-Zero, that may use the Wii Wheel, Star-Fox, Kirby, and many others. But Metroid: Other M looks very good. But that is really the only hard core series, that I've heard of, that showed up there. Any Ways, it really seems like they ran out of ideas. Most of the stuff announced are sequels or spin-offs. Which is a little sad. But almost every game looks good. Mario & Luigi I think will be very original, because now you have Bowser, and you are usually inside Bowser's stomach, or insides, so you have certain... "elements" that you have to face. The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks looks a little... well... strange, I guess. I mean, the dungeons look really nice, and I think you get to use a Phantom person or whatever they're called, for your advantage.
That will make things interesting. And the NSMBWII looks really cool, and it uses the elements of CO-OP, which I love. Wii Sports Resort looks nice too. It has nice graphics, for the Wii. And some cool sports too. AND SWORD FIGHTS! WITH WII MOTION PLUS! But they really need a Zelda using that too. Wii Fit Plus is okay, since I use Wii Fit, but it's nothing to get excited about. But it would be nice to transfer your Wii Fit data over. Anyways, again, I am disappoitned but impressed with Nintendo's E3 conference.

I remember when you did the BioShock 2 feature someone asked if all British journalists were pessimistic assholes. I disagree with him and continue to, but your articles do tend to be pessimistic. Still, good article, pessimistic or not.
