Comic-Con 2009: 5 most important missed stories

Under-the-radar scoops from the nerdiest place on earth

Words: Henry Gilbert, GamesRadar US

For decades, the San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) was only known as the best place for avid comic fans (aka virgins) to waste tons of money on more comic books than they needed. But in the last 10 years, other bits of geekery have been seeping in, including anime, Dungeons & Dragons and even videogames. In fact, each year, gaming's presence at Comic-Con keeps growing bigger and bigger, with some major news going down.

Above: Been there, done that

You're probably already bored with hearing about the Halo anime. And as cool as Gambit and Penance being announced for Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 is, that's pretty niche. So after a whole weekend of scouring the internets, we're proud to bring you five stories from Comic-Con that you probably missed, no matter how important they were.

1. There are approximately 8,000 comics based on games, with more on the way

Though comic adaptations of games were around even before the Archie-published Sonic comics of the '90s, there’s been a deluge of them since the big success of the Halo original graphic novel a few years ago, although you probably haven't noticed. Gears of War, Resistance, World of Warcraft and Prototype have all gotten their own series (or limited series), and we’re guessing they’ve been successful, because a crapload more comics got announced at SDCC.

EA was the biggest force, as they announced upcoming comic versions of Dante's Inferno (DC Comics is publishing), Dead Space: Extraction from Image Comics and Mass Effect from Dark Horse Comics. Meanwhile, new franchises from Capcom and Activision (Spyborgs and Singularity, respectively) are getting one-off comics to help hype and introduce readers to the new games. Even God of War is getting into it. But what fascinated us most was the news that Jordan Mechner, the creator of Prince of Persia and the driving force behind the recent classic Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, is writing a graphic novel meant to follow the PoP film coming next year.

Why is this fascinating? Three reasons: first, unlike 99 percent of previous comics based on games, this one has the direct involvement of someone very important to the series. Second, Jordan Mechner has already written a really good Prince of Persia graphic novel. And third, the more we see from the PoP film the more hope we put into the idea of this comic redeeming a possibly crappy film.

Don't give a tiniest of rat anuses about anything to do with Halo.

And the Mass Effect comic is the only bit of news there that seems even remotely interesting or good.
But then I remember that interactivity is the best bit of Mass Effect and thus a comic, even with their writing talent - will probably suck and just be generic sci-fi poo.

Positivity! ;D

Alright a mass effect comic. I'm still playing it right now! Also a dead space extraction comic? Spooky. Gotta read the Original Dead Space comic.

I'm really excited for the Scitt Pilgrim game. Hopefully it won't suck.
I'm also interested in the Dead Space comic. Ben Templesmith does great artwork.

This was an epic slap in the face for me. And the Castle Crusher thing seems cool.

I already knew Bungie had a new IP in the works. They just talked about it in one of their recent updates.

I like game comics, but I don't live near a comic store, so I usually have to wait until the compilation book comes out at Barnes and Noble/Borders.

I'm all for something new in anime other than the ever-present and overrated wishful asian thinking/wet dreams that most of it is - but I swear to the God of video games that the japanese better not screw up Halo like they seem to screw up everything else they get their mits on.
